UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
PETER H. MAYO AND THOMAS ATKINSON, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNORS TO P. H. MAYO & BROTHER, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN REMOVABLE COVERS FOR SHOW -BOXES.
Specificaticn f0rming part of Letters Patent No. 210,345, dated November 26,1878; application filed August 31, 1878.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, PETER H. MAYO and THOMAS ATKINSON, both of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented new and usefullmprovcments in Removable Covers for Boxes and other Packages, of which the following is a specification:
The subject of our invention is a removable front or cover, of wood, metal, or other material, for boxes or packages containing tobacco, cigars, or other goods which are removed from time to time in small quantities for retailing, said front or cover being adapted for ready application to successive boxes or packages, and preferably provided with hinges, slides, or other means to afi'ord ready access to the contents. It is also preferably constructed with a glass front, to expose the contents of the box or package or for the display of advertisements.
Our invention particularly consists in constructing a removable front with a frame, forming an extenson of the box to which it is ap plied, secured thereto by internal spring:clips, or dowels in lieu thereof, and having its internal and external surfaces flush with those of the box, as hereinafter described.
In order that our invention may be fully understood, we will proceed to describe it, with reference to the accompanying drawin gs, which illustrate the application of our invention to tobacco-boxcs, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box for plug-tobacco with our improved front applied. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the box, llustrating a modification in the mode of attachin g the front and hin gin g its door. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, illustrating another modification, in which our removable front is provided with a sliding door. Fi g. 4; is a front view, illustratin g the appearance of the tobaccoplugs as seen through the glass door. I i g. 5 is aview of a combined or connected front applied to a series of boxes.
B is a box, which may be of ordinary form.
Our improved front consists of a frame, A, provided with a hinged or sliding door or cover, C, which is preferably glazed, as shown, so as to expose the contents of the box to view,
and may be ornamented with pictures or advertisements, displayed on cards or painted on the glass orother material of the cover. The frame Ais removably secured to the box B, to admit of it being readily changed from one box to another as they are emptied.
In Figs. 1 and 3 we have shown spring-clips D D. These may be applied on either the inside or outside, so as to hold by friction against the sides of the box, and shallow recesses may, if desired, be made to receive them, so that they may be flush with the surface. If it be desired to fasten the front of the box more permanently, this may be effected by screws applied through the clamps or springs D D but for ordinary purposes the latter will hold with sufficient security, if properly constructed. The fastening, if exposed, may be made ornamental.
In Fig. 2 the front is secured to the box by dowels E E.-
In Fig. 5 we have shown a combined front applied to a range of boxes, B B B, placed side by side for the purpose. The said figure also shows a supplcmcntal cover, H, with which either the connected or the separate fronts of either form maybe provided, so that by removing the top and one Side of the box its contents may be exposed to view in nudisturbed condition in front, and may be ap proached from above for taking out any quantity desired. The covers may be provided with lock and key, to prevent access by unanthorized parties.
For fine-cut tobacco, or other goods which are subject to injury by exposure to the atmsphere, the cover is closed against a luting of strips of rubber or other yielding material, as shown at I.
Our invention is of great utility in preserving articles from evaporaton, dust, weather,
&c., and thus keeping in good salable condi V tion the contents of the boxes or other packages to which the fronts maybe applied. The device is also valuable for ornamenting and decorating the shelves and show-windows of the dealer. This is especially the case with plug-tobacco and other goods which are usually retailed from the boxes or packages in which they are received from the manufacturer. As now stored and used, tobaccoboxes ere unsightly, whereas by the application of our device they may he made pleasing md attractive. The device cen also be used to good advm1 tage iu advertising the goods of particular mmmfacturers, who can thus make it profituhle to supply them gratuitously to the retuiler for his use and convenience.
Having thus described our inveution, the fo] lowin g is what we claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The frame A, adapted for attechment to the box B by internal clips D, or dowels, provided With EL door, C, and having its interior und exterior surfaces flush with those of the box, as shown und described.
