PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN P. HIRD, OF REDLANDS. CALIFORNIA.
CABINET FOR SHAVING SUPPLIES- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Paten N0- 782,963, dated February 21, 1905.
Application filed October 15, 1903. Serial No. 177,195.
To (LZZ whom it iii/my concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN P. HIRD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redlands, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented a new and useful Cabinet for Shaving Supplies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to abox adapted to be placed upon a counter or show-case in stores, so as to be displayed in a manner to attract the eye of possible purchasers of shaving supplies, the box being constructed in a special manner for holding the various shaving appliances and materials. The box is not designed as a case for holding a set of shaving supplies for individual use, but is constructed for holding an ample supply of carefully-selected goods-such as razors, strops, soap, tweezers, hair-tonic, depilatory, &c.-from which the dealer may sell.
' It is usually a difficult matter for one who shaves himself to select intelligently a razor of proper quality, and it is also very diflicult to select a proper strop. For instance, in purchasing a razor the customer has presented to him for selection a great variety of razors, good, bad, and indifferent in quality, and except to an expert the selection is very difficult, and it is difficult for any one but an expert to select a razor of the proper quality. The selection of strops is equally difiicult, as is well known. Other minor shaving supplies such as soap, for instancemay, perhaps, be selected without great difficulty; but the prime object of the present invention is to provide a box of the character described which will hold a supply of various shaving articles of a high quality and guaranteed, so that a person wishing to buy a razor may be spared the time and annoyance of making a selection, but may buy any of the articlesfrom the box with a full assurance that whatever is purchased from the box will be of the best selection and particularly adapted for individual use. For instance, in buying a strop the strop which would be selected for use by a barber would not be the kind of strop suitable for an individuals private use. Although both strops might be good, one would be adapted for constant use by an expert who wvhich would conveniently fit therein.
understands its care, while the other strop would be constructed especially for the use of an individual, who would give it but little use comparatively, but which would give the best of satisfaction considering the care which it received.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention, and referring to the same Figure I is a perspective View of the box with the top lid raised, a portion of the large lid broken away to show the interior of the upper receptacle and the lower drawer pulled open. Fig. II is a transverse vertical section through the box.
The cabinet comprises a bottom 1, end walls 2, and a back 3. The lower portion of the box is provided with preferably two drawers 4 and 5. Asshown in Fig. I, the drawer may have a cross-partition 6 and a partition 7 arranged lengthwise to form the drawer into three divisions suitable for holding strops, soap, razors, or other packages or articles The upper part of the box has a sloping front, which is covered by a lid 8, hinged at 9 to a bar 10, which extends across the box just above the upper drawer. A narrow lid 11 is hinged to the upper edge of the back and, with the lid 8, forms an upper compartment suitable for the reception of various articles needed for one who shaves himself. The upper compartment has a bottom 12, upon which is supported lengthwise partitions 13 and 1a, with cross-partitions 15, thus forming the upper compartment into five divisions. The sloping lid 8 is admirably adapted to carry advertising matter or other information indicative of the contents and having the inclination, as shown, gives the advertising matter a conspicuous display easily read by a customer when the box stands on a counter.
The box may be stocked with the various appliances and supplies, and to an intending purchaser the dealer may raise the large lid to expose the contents in an attractive manner and open the drawers, so that a complete survey of the contents may be made without rummaging through the box and disarranging the contents. The contents may be arranged in an attractive manner, so that when displayed to the customer the prospects of a sale may be furthered. The supplies may be placed in the respective divisions either in their packages or loose, and a selection of supplies may thus be readily made from the various compartments.
The top lid 11 may be raised after the lid 8 is opened, so that the upper compartment is perfectly accessible and articles may be removed therefrom readily, the box as a whole being constructed with the special view of conveniently packing the articles.
Vhat I claim is A cabinet comprising ,a lower oblong portion, an upper portion having a sloping front, two drawers in the lower portion, suitable partitions in the drawers, a bottom for the upper portion, a front partition-wall rising from said bottom to a point immediately under the sloping front, another partition on said bottom rising to a point higher than the front partition, suitable cross-partitions on said bottom of the same height as the front partition, and extending from the front partition to the back partition, a cover forming the sloping front, a cross-bar at the angle between the sloping front of the upper portion and the top front edge of the lower portion, the cover being hinged to the cross-bar, and a narrow cover hinged to the top edge of the back wall, the free edges of the two hinged covers meeting when closed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, at Redlands, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, this 7th day of October, 1903.
