MUM
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
HUGH QUINN BAILEY, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
SHOW-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NQ. 372352, dated November l, 18?.
Serial No. 237,354. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUGH QUINN BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Show Cases or Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a case to contain cutlery, having for its object the provision of a case for the purpose named which shall be adapted to contain the desired number of knives, razors, scissors, or other articles, and have a false or double top or cover to the box, which shall contain asample of the articlesin the box, thusenabling the customer to closely examine the said articles without handling them; and my invention consists, further, in providing a rack or casein which to place the said boxes, which shall be so constructed as to allow the said customer to closely examine he article in the box without handling the In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a perspective view of the case complete. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail section of one of the boxes. Fig/ 1c is a detail perspective view of the same.
Referring to the drawings byletter, Adesignates the rack to contain the show-boxes B, and the said rack comprises a frame, C, having the series of shelves D therein, provided on the front edges with the upwardly and downwardly extending flanges E, for a purpose hereinafter explained. Y
rlhe boxes B may be of any preferred shape and size to suit the shape and size and number of articles to be contained therein, and G is a cover to be placed over the same in the usual manner. y
H represents an additional cover, having the outer side thereof formed of glass or other transparent material, which is adapted to have the flanges thereof slipped down over the flanges of the cover G.
It will be seen that any article placed on the outer side of the cover G and under the glass or transparent cover may be clearly seen by the customer, and as the iianges of the glass cover are made to fit those of the under cover very tightly, and also to move on the same,"it will be seen that the glass in the transparent cover may be caused to press tightly upon the article in the outer section of the box and thus hold it firmly in the said box or section. The glass cover is thus made adjustable to fit the size of the article under the same, and therefore when the case or box .is handled by the customer in examining the sample of knife around in the said section.
` It is usual in'cutlery stores to havethe stock of knives, Snc., contained in boxes on the shelves, and to display a sample of each kind in the show-case on the counter; but. when this is done a' customer cannot closely examine an article at such a distance, and therefore it must be handed to him. This necessitates a double handlingof the article, which in avery short time causes rust on the tool, which renders it unfit for sale except at a reduction. My invention is designed to obviate this trouble, the stock of cutlery being kept in the larger section of the boxes herein described, with a sample under the transparent outer cover, and the said boxes are arranged in the rack A with the said transparent covers showing on the face of the case, thus presenting the appearance of a vertical show-case the face of which is almost entirely glass. The boxes are placed in the rack from the rear and are pushed forward or outward until the front edges of the said boxes bear against theflanges E, thus holding the faces of the boxes inthe same vertical plane. Thus a customer may very closely examine an article without removing it from the case, and should he desire a still better View of the same the box containing the particular sample may be handed to him.
It will thus be seen that the article of cutlery need not be handled except when being placed in the box, and it will be preserved from rust and be in as good condition to sell as the articles in the larger compartment of the box.
I am aware that boxes for confectionery have 'been heretofore made with double sid-es, the
not claim this construction, broadly; but the said sides are not adjustable to the size of the contained article, as in my box, and also are not removable at will, as herein shown.
Having described my invention, I'claim-k 1. The herein-described showcase, compris ing the main compartment or box B, the cover outer one being of glass, and I therefore do therein the said sample will not roll or move G, having the flanges to slide over the edges ol' the box, and the transparent cover H, having [langes to fit and slide on the iianges ol the cover G, whereby the space between the said oevers may be adjusted to suit the sizeof the article therein, substantially as speeilied.
2. In a show-ease for cutlery, the eonibination of the rack A, having the shelves D therein, the flanges E on the front edges of the Shelves and extending above and below the same, the boxes B, having the large compartments for stock and the smaller compartments for samples, having transparent outer sides, the said boxes being adapted to be placed on the shelves D,Witl1 the front edges bearing I5 against the flanges E on the upper and lower sides, respectively, of the shelves between which the box is placed, the glass faces of the boxes being thus brought into the same vertical plane, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HUGH QUINN BAILEY.
