tlnrrn AIENT OFFICE.
MORRIS SILBERSTEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MUFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,827, dated September 6, 1881.
Application filed July 5, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Momus SILBnRsrntN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mutts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a inutit' which is composed of a flat strip and a suitable fastening device for securing the ends of the strip together, said fastening device being secured to the strip at some distance from one of its ends and adapted to be passed over the folded strip at a distance from its other end. The ends of the strip are provided with stift'eners composed of metal or other suitable material, and between these stiffeners and the fastening device arepockets in theinner side of the folded strip.
This invention isillustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my folding muff. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of my muff when unfolded.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, the letter A, Fig. 3, designates a strip of some suitable materiahot' sufficient length and width to produce my folding mntt'. This strip is covered with far or other suitable material on one or both sides, or it may be covered with fur on one side and with silk or satin on its opposite side. To this strip, at a certain distance from one of its ends, is secured the fastening device B, which, in the example shown in the drawings, consists of two loops, to a, provided at theirends with buttons, and of such a length that when the strip A is folded, as shown in Fig.1, said loops can be drawn across the strip and connected together by their buttons.
To the opposite ends of the strip A are secured cords O, which form handles for carrying the article when the. same is folded, as shown in Fig. 1, or which serve for ornaments, lying over the front part of the article when the same is used as a muff.
Both ends of the strip A are provided with stiffeners b b, which are made of flat pieces of sheet metal or other suitable material and fastened between the lining and the body of the strip A. These stiffeners serve to keep the edges extended, and when the hands are (No model.)
placed into the muif formed by the bightof the strip A those portions of said strip which extend beyond the fastening device act asjaws, which close up when the mud is expanded. In the interior of these jaws are formed pockets D, Figs. 2 and 3, and if the muff isexpanded and the jaws are closed the articles containedin said pockets are protected against loss; but if the muff is permitted to collapse the jaws open and the contents of said pockets can be reached conveniently.
When my mufi is unfolded it can be packed away in a comparatively-small space. It is cheap in its manufacture, it can be reversed or made reversible, if desired, and presents a novel and ornamental appearance.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an improved article of manufacture, the folding mutt composed of atlat strip having the cords (0, provided with buttons and secured to said strip at a distance from one of its ends, the said cords being adapted to be passed over the folded strip at a distance from its other end, as set forth.
.2. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the flat strip, the fastening device secured to the strip at a distance from one of its ends and adapted to be passed over the folded strip at a distance from its other end, and the stiffenersin the ends of the strip.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the flat strip, the fastening device secured to the strip at a distance from one of its ends and adapted to be passed over the folded strip ata distancefrom its other end, and the pocketor pockets.
4. The combination, substantially as hereinbet'ore described, ot' the flat strip, the fastening device secured to the strip at a distance from one of its ends and adapted to be passed over the folded strip at a distance from its other end, the stiffeners in the ends oft-he strips, and the pockets.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MORRIS SILBERSTEIN.
