IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED HOOD AN D CLOAK.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,243, dated September 2, 1879; application filed July 25, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

My invention consists in a hood which is provided with a transverse shirring-strin g at a point between the front and back, for the purpose of gathering that part of the hood, thereby converting the same into a bonnet; also, in the combination of this hood with a cloak, the two being fastened together, so that the whole is adapted for conversion from a combined cloak and hood into a combined cloak and bonnet.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the hood, and b a shirring-string arranged therein between the front and the back. 0 is a cloak combined with the hood. Both the hood A and the cloak C are ornamented with suitable trimmings, and the hood is fastened to the cloak in such a manner that it may be folded and lowered on the cloak, as shown in Fig. 1, or raised, as shown in .Figs. 2, 3, and 4, in which position the same is adapted to be drawn over the head.

The hood A, moreover, is provided with hooks and eyes or other fastenings, for confining the extremities thereof, and the cloak O is usually attached to a secondary or longer cloak, marked 0, buttons or other similar fastenings being used for this purpose.

The shirring-string b is inclosed in a pocket, (1, formed at an appropriate part of the hood A, and is in two parts, which are fastened at the ends of the pockets, which is the lower edge of the hood, and are drawn out of the pocket within and at the top of the hood, as at 6, Fig. 1, where said parts of the string may be tied together or fastened in any other suitable manner.

When the hood A is to be left in its normal state the shirring-string b is simply allowed to remain loose or slack, the hood then having substantially the shape shown in Fig. 3; but when it is desired to alter theappearance of the, hood-namely, to convert the same into a certain style of bonnet or cap-the shirringstring is tightened so as to gather or contract the hood between the front and back, as shown in Fig. 4. In this manner a desirable feature is given to the hood, and by combining the hood with the cloak 0 two analogous but differently-fashioned articles can be produced,

one being a combined cloak and hood and the other a combined cloak and bonnet.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with a hood, a shirring string or cord extending transversely across the top of the same from side to side, and intermediate between the front and rear portions of the hood, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination, with a cloak, of an attached hood provided with a shirring string or cord extending transversely across the top of the same -from side to side, and between the front and rear portions of the hood, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The combination, with the hood A, having the pocket D extending from the sides of the hood around the top of the shining-string inclosed in the pocket, and passing through an opening in the same at the upper portion of the hood, substantially as shown and described.
