COMBINED SMOOTHING, FLUTING, AND PoL'lsHiNG IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,336, dated August 9, 1881.
Application tiled May 1l, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST F. ZIMMER- LING, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Smoothing, Fluting, and Polishing Irons, and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists of a combined smoothing, iluting, and polishing iron, together with a device for heating the same, all as more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my entire device, inclined toward the inspector to better show its operation and construction. Fig. 2Y is a longitudinal vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail.
A represents the combined iron, cast hollow, as shown in section, and having four operative surfaces, two of them, a a, being peri'ectlytlat and designedfor the ordinary smoothing of clothing, while the surface a is corrugated for iluting, and the surface a2 has a rounded rear edge, a3, and is especially designed for polishing linen. The iron A is formed with a hub, B, at one end, and a ring or flange, C, surrounding the opening into its interior, at the other end, the said hub and flange forming, respectively, the trunnions of the iron, whereby it is suspended within its frame and permitted to turn therein. This frame consists of an ordinary handle, D, and two shanks, E F, to the upper portions of which the handle is secured by a headed bolt and nut in the ordinary manner, the handle being made of wood and the rest of the-devioe preferably of metal.
el The shank E is provided at its lower end with a ring or thimble, @,toiit over the hubB, as shown, and has a groove or recess, O, .eX- tending throughout the entire straight face of the shank, to receive the springcatch E', which conforms inits general appearance to the shank E, to which it is pivoted at p. Behind this pivot the shank is recessed to receive thelower end of a straight spring, q, the lupper end of which bears against the top of the catch E', forcing its lower end, c', into a groove, b, in the hub B, securely locking the iron in the desired position. The shank Fis provided at its lower end with the ring or thimble f, fitting around the lauge G, as shown. This shank is also provided with two headed bolts, r r, to receive and support the slotted plate S, which carries the heating device, the h'eyinogleslotsssin this plate being large enough at their base to pass over the heads of the bolts r r, and extending upward in a narrow slit just wide enough to receive the shanks of these bolts, thus forming a secure lock. The upper portion of the plate S is curved to form a support for the reservoir T, which is an ordinary cylinder having a neck-opening, fr, in the top closed by a common screw-cap, t.
A pipe, U, screw-threaded at its upper inner end, u, projects into the cylinder through its bottom and extends downward therefrom, and is bent at an angle, as shown, to pass through the plate S and into the interior of the iron A, terminating in a burner, V, perforated with a number of minute holes. the opening into the iron when it is locked in place, and to insure the combustion within the iron, the rear end of the latter is perforated with a number of' air-holes, A.
The reservoir T is supplied with naphtha, alcohol, or similar volatile iluid, and its supply'to the burner V is regulated by means of the valve W, which is screw-threaded at its lower end to t into the top of pipe U, and has V-shaped grooves w, formed in opposite sides of the screw-threaded portion, deepest at the base, so that by turning the handle of the valve either way the openings into the pipe U may be increased or, diminished and the iow of the iiuid regulated at pleasure. I prefer to place wicking or other suitable absorbent within the pipe'U, to assist in checking the too ready flow of the iluid employed.
The operation ot' my device will be clearly seen by the drawings and the above description of its construction.

`or back again, a slight pressure of the thumb The plate S closes IOO of the operator upon the top of the springcatch E will force the lower end, e', of the said catch out of the groove b in the hub B, and when the desired operating-surface is directly underneath the handle, and the other groove b in a vertical position, the iron is instantly locked firmly in place by simply releasing the spring-catch.
I am aware that I am not the first to construct a smoothing-iron with a plurality of surfaces some of which are adapted for polishing or fluting, nor am I the first to make an iron hollow and heat the same from a reservoir attached thereto having a pipe passing into the interior of the iron, and such, broadly, I do not claim; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a combined smoothing, tluting, and polishing device, the hollow iron A, having two smooth flat surfaces, aa,acorrugated surface, a', and a polishing surface, a2, with rounded rear edge, a, in combination with the bent pipeU u, valve W w, and burner V, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a combined smoothing, nting, and polishing device, the combination of the bent pipe U, screw-threaded atits upper inner end, with the valve W, having an exterior handle and screw-threaded at its lower end, and provided with the V-shap'ed grooves w, formed in opposite sides of the screw-threaded portion and deepest at the base, as shown and described.
