- JOSEPH J. wALToN, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAIR-LEADERS FOR SHIPS RIGGING.
Spccification formirg part of Letters Patent No. 145,919, dated Decemlxr 23, 1873; applkation filed December 4, 1873. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, JOSEPH J. WALTON, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wind-Sail Halyard-Bloeks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and t0 the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a wind-sail halyard-block, to be applied to shrouds or any other part of the rigging, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a front elevation, of my device.
A represents a plate of any suitable dimensions, made in concavo-convex form to fit along the side of a rope, mast, or any part of the rigging of a vessel. At each end of the plate A is a flange, a, projecting outward on the convex side, and in the center on each side is an outward-projecting ear, B. This plate A, with its flanges a a and ears B B, may be cast in one piece, or it may be stamped out, or
otherwise made in any suitable manner. Between the ears B B is pivoted the pulley 0, either by means of a pin or rivet passing through a central hole in the same, upon which it revolves, or by making the pulley solid, with a journal at each end to enter the holes in the ears. The pulley O is made concave, as shown, to hold the halyard better in the same.
This halyard-block is useful for a variety of purposes, and is to be attached to any part desired of the rigging by means of ordinary seizing, I), wrapped around the rope and the plate or scotchman A, between the ears B B and the flange a at each end, said flanges preventing it from slipping off, either up or down.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the withindescribed halyard-block, consisting of the plate A, with flanges a a and ears B B, and the pulley 0, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH J. WALTON.
