Description

L. L. STEIGERWLD STRAP EXTENDER r Sept. 7, 1948.
Filed Feb. 22, 1945 Patented Sept. 7, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE STRAP EXTENDER Libera L. Steigerwald, Chicago, Ill.
Application February 22, 1945, Serial No. 579,284 1 claim. (c1. '2l-23o) This invention relates to a strap extender, and more particularly to a device for use on overalls and other garments for extending the effective length of straps and thereby extending the effective length of the garment.
Many types of garments contain straps which are buttoned to the body portion of the garment. This arrangement is used, for example, in overalls and similar garments. It is often desirable to lengthen the garment. In the case of overalls and similar garments for children, it is desirable to lengthen the garment as the child grows.
An object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective device for lengthening such garments by extending the effective length of the straps therein. Another object is to provide a'combination garment and strap-extending device wherein the strap-extending device is buttoned at one end to a strap of the garment and at the other end to the body portion of the garment. Another object is to provide a device which utilizes the buttons and button holes of the garment itself. Still another object is to provide a strap extender which is made of thin sheet material and is of the form of a iiexible strap. A further object is to provide an attractive yet effective device.
Other features and advantages will appear from the following specification and drawing, in Which- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of overalls showing the device of the invention in position thereon; Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the device; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of the invention described herein, the device includes a body portion I which may be of any suitable design or shape and, as illustrated, may be in the shape of a rabbit. The body portion of the article may be made of a strip of thin sheet material, such as leather, fabric, or the like. The sheet material is preferably exible.
Adjacent the end II of the article is a button hole I2, while adjacent the other end I3 is a button I4. The button and button hole may be of any suitable or conventional type or character.
The device is used in combination with a garment by securing the button I4 to a buttonhole in the garment, and the buttonhole I2 to a button in the garment. When used in combination with overalls, as seen particularly in Fig. 1, the ends I I of the device are secured to the ends of the straps I5. The other ends I3 of the device are secured to the body portion I6 of the overalls. In use, buttons I1 on the overall straps extend through the buttonholes I2, while the buttons I4 are received within the buttonholes I8 of the body of the overalls.
The device may be referred to as a strap extender since in use the device is normally attached to the straps of the overalls, with the button I1 extending through the adjacent buttonhole I2. When the overalls are to be put on or removed by the child, the button I4 is passed through the buttonhole I8.
In accordance with the invention, the strapextending device is combined with a garment having a strap member and a body member wherein one of the members is equipped with a button and the other member equipped with a buttonhole. The strap-extending device contains a buttonhole adjacent one end and a button adjacent the other end, and each of the ends is buttoned to the garment, one end being buttoned to the strap and the other end being buttoned to the body.
Although the invention has been described in connection with a specic embodiment, it will be apparent that modifications and changes may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim: y
In combination with a garment having a strap member and a body member, said strap member being provided with a button and said body member being provided with a buttonhole, a device for extending the effective length of the strap comprising a flat strip of material which is relatively wide at its bottom and equipped with a button in lone corner of the enlarged bottom portion, said member tapering upwardly and inwardly toward the top thereof and being provided with an inclined slit in the corner of the upper end which is diagonally opposite to the button on the lower end of the strip, said button being adapted to be received within the buttonhole of the body member with the wide bottom portion thereof extending in contact with the body member and said inclined slit at the top of the strip of material receiving the button of said strap, said strip having a grip extension extending in substantial alignment with said slit and terminating in a free end slightly above the slit.
