This invention relates to a ladys compact and has for its primary object a compact which can be plastic molded and hence manufactured with relative ease in large quantities at moderate cost. Other particular objects and advantages exhibited 7 Claims. (Cl, 132-83) by the preferred form of the invention are to provide such a compact effectively sealed against powder leakage and having a simple, easily operated double lock of the snap type. Still other objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
The invention in brief comprises a compact composed of a container, a lid, and a main cover, each of which can be readily molded of plastic material and easily assembled, as will be better understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a compact representing a preferred form of the invention, with a portion of the cover and lid cut away to illustrate the lock mechanism;
Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section along the line III--III of Fig. 2 when the compact is closed;
Fig, 4 is a cross-section along the line III--III of Fig. 2 when the compact is open;
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the main cover;
Fig. 6 is a top plan View of the container;
Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the lid; and
Fig. 8 is a cross-section, along the line VIII- VIII of Fig. 6, on an enlarged scale.
In general, the compact comprises three main elements, consisting of a base or container I, whichincludes the powder compartment, a lid 2 for such compartment, and a main or outside cover 3.
In this preferred form, the container I has integral hinge knuckles 4, 5 and 6 suitably located at and projecting outwardly from its rear wall, each knuckle having a hinge-pin hole I. In the front wall of container I are formed two recesses, one within the other; that is to say there is a shallow recess and a deeper, central recess opening from it. The shallow recess is bounded by the flat side walls 9 and the curved walls I0; and the deeper, central recess is bounded by the fiat side walls I I and the curved wall I2. A cavity or reservoir I3 is provided as a powder storage space; and surrounding cavity I3, and on an intermediate step or land I4 is an upstanding tongue I5, the top of the tongue being located somewhat below the top surface I6 of the container.
The lid 2 is formed with outwardly and downwardly projecting knuckles I1 and I8 at the rear and a curved downwardly projecting resilient tab 19 at the front, each of the knuckles having a transparent material such as lucite.
hinge-pin hole 28. A groove 2|, complementary to the tongue l5 of container I, is formed in the underside of lid 2, and in the shallow cavity 23 is a mirror 22 suitably secured as by bezel ring 24.
The cover 3 is formed at the rear with a pair of downwardly projecting hinge knuckles 25 and 26, eachknuckle having a hinge-pin hole 21. At its front, the cover is formed with a downwardly projecting resilient depending tab 28, curved on its inner side as at 29. A mirror 30 may be mounted in a cavity 3| formed in the underside of the cover and suitably secured in place, as by a bezel ring 32.
As will be apparent from the drawings, the three major elements, comprising container, lid and cover, are assembled by meshing their respective hinge knuckles and inserting a hinge-pin 8,
the lid knuckles I1 and I8 being spaced to enter between the container knuckles 4, 5 and 6 and the cover knuckles 25 and 26 being spaced to embrace all of the other knuckles. Due to the greater dimension of the cover, from front to rear, it overlies and entirely conceals the hinge (see Fig. 1). Also, it will be observed, the hinge is protected against entanglement with the sundry other objects to be found in the purse or handbag where it is usually carried.
When closed, the lid 2 seats closely upon the "land I4, with its groove 2| fitting over the tongue I5 and with its upper surface substantially flush with but slightly above the top surface it of the container. In this position, and the powder compartment well sealed, the lid is locked by the snap-engagement of tab I9 over the wall l2 of the deeper recess. The container wall, it will be noted, is recessed at 33 and 34, between the container hinge knuckles (Fig. 6) to accommodate the shank portions of hinge knuckles I! and I 8.
Upon closure of cover 3, a still further seal and lock is efiected by reason of the fact that the inner surface 35 of the cover bears upon the back or top of the lid 2 (see Fig. 3) and is locked in this position by the snap-engagement of its tab 28 over the curved wall portions ID of the container.
While certain of the features of the invention can be otherwise achieved, it will be recognized that the construction lends itself particularly well to plastic molding; and, in a preferred form of the invention, the cover, at least, is made of a In this form thecover mirror 30 can be faced outwardly,
'or it can be a double mirror, so that one face is available for use without requiring the compact to be opened. As usual in two-mirror compacts,
