VANITY CASE Filed May 23, 1935 ATTORNEY$ m W M Patented Dec. 22, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE VANITY CASE Application May 23, 1935, Serial No. 22,934
7 Claims.
This invention relates to vanity cases.
It is an object of the invention to provide an improved vanity case particularly suitable for loose powder and rouge and one that is simple in construction and economical to manufacture.
With these general objects and others in view, the invention consists in the features, details of construction and arrangements of parts which will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawing and then more particularly pointed out.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a vanity case constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the lid open and the slide closed;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with parts broken away and in section, showing the lid open and the slide partly open;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view (enlarged) taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, with parts in elevation; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary plan view of one of the parts.
Referring to the drawing, the invention in its entirety includes an open-topped casing and means for dividing the same into two compartments, one for loose powder and the other for rouge or the like. While the two compartments may be partitioned off in various ways, in the embodiment here illustrated as an example, fitting in the rear portion of easing l l is a housing 12, the front wall l3 of which serves as a partition. This partition divides the casing into an open-topped front compartment M for a rouge pad or the like (not shown) and a rear compartment [5, enclosed by the housing, for loose powder (not shown).
In carrying out the invention to what is now considered the best advantage, the housing I2 is in the form of a separate fitment that is retained in position by the mere act of assembly. To this end, the side wall of the housing, except at the front, is formed to fit the contour of the corresponding parts of the casing wall. As will be apparent from the drawing, the irregular shape of these walls retains the housing against any sliding movement in the casing. On the inner side of the casing wall are one or more nibs I6 which take into suitable holes in the housing wall. With the construction described, the separate fitment forming housing l2 snaps into position and is frictionally retained therein with the use of an extraneous fastening device.
The housing I2 is conveniently formed in two telescoping parts, as appears more clearly in Fig. 3. The lower part comprises a bottom and an upstanding wall and the upper part comprises a cover and a depending wall. As the bottom part telescopes into the upper part, and as the latter is frictionally held in place as described, no fastening means is necessary between the two parts of the housing.
The top wall or cover of housing [2 is dished slightly, as at H, to form a powder well and space for an applicator pad or puff and has an opening l8 for discharge of or access to the powder.
The invention in its entirety includes a removable closure for the powder opening and this may conveniently take the form of a slide. In the embodiment here shown as an example, slidable in the upper part of compartment l5 just below its cover, is a flat plate forming a closure slide l9. To this end, slide l9 has a T-head terminating in oppositely disposed lugs 20. These lugs slide on the upper edge of the lower part of the twopart housing, the rear end of the slide operating in a slot 2| formed by cutting away the rear end walls of the two parts of the housing. The slide is guided laterally by the engagement of lugs 20 with false side walls 22 formed in the upper part of the housing. Movement of the slide forward is limited by engagement of the end of the slide with the front wall of the housing and movement rearwardly is limited by the engagement of lugs 20 or the T-head with the inward bends of the housing side wall (Fig. 2).
The invention in its entirety includes a lid for the casing and means whereby the closure slide is prevented from opening movement except While the lid is open. This may conveniently be accomplished by hinging the lid to the slide. To this end, as here shown as an example, the lid 23 is in the form of a flat plate which seats on the upper edge of the casing side wall. The rear end of this lid is hingedly connected with the rear end of the slide by means hereinafter described. The lid is normally held closed by an eye 24 which takes over a pin 24a on the front end of the casing.
When the lid is closed and latched, closure slide 19 is necessarily in advanced position to cover or close powder opening 18 and is held in such position as long as the lid remains closed. Thus, any discharge of powder is prevented while the case is not in use. free to move and the lid serves as a handle for pulling out the slide to uncover opening l8.
The invention in its entirety includes an overlay for one or more sides of the case, formed of a metal distinctive in color and appearance from When the lid is opened, the slide is 0 the metal of the case and in constructions embodying the invention to what is now considered the best advantage such overlay may be used to efiect the hinge connection between the lid and the closure slide.
In the embodiment here illustrated as an example, the lid 23 of the case is formed of nickel or chromium plated metal and the inner face may serve as a mirror. The front and rear edges of the lid are cut away (Fig. 4) to form long, shallow notches 25. On the upper or outer face of the lid is overlaid a strip 26 of distinctive metal, e. g. a low brass, stamped into any desired decorative design, and held in place by having its ends bent down into notches 25, as at 21 (Fig. 2). The drawing shows an overlay on the lid only but it is to be understood that a similar overlay may be applied to the bottom of the casing.
In the embodiment of the invention here illustrated as an example, the rear end of overlay strip 26 has a tongue rolled up to form a hinge knuckle 28 which is straddled by two similar knuckles 29 formed on the end of closure slide !9 to receive a hinge pintle 30. The front end of the strip 26 has a tongue rolled up to form a knuckle 3| for latching eye 25,
If desired, the rouge compartment may have a simple hinged cover and there may be a layer of felt under the closure slide at the back wall of the casing to prevent leakage of powder.
