9 Claims. (o1.- 132-s3) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in vanity boxes of the type adapted to hold a supply of various-cosmetics.

An object of the invention is to provide. a.

- 5 vanity box including a case, areceptacle adapted to receive cosmetics as powder, rouge and the like and slidable into and out of the casebetween openand closed positions, and means to lock the receptacle in either closed or. open position to prevent accidental movement of the receptacle relative to the case. I

Another object is to provide a vanity box including a case, a receptacle adapted to receive cosmetics, as powder, rouge and the like and slid- 1 able into and out of the case between closed and open positions, and said receptacle including a body and a cover hinged to the body and means whereby the cover automatically opens when the receptacle moves out of the case and is automati- -'20 cally closed as the receptacle is moved into the case. 1

A further object is to provide a vanity box including a case,.a receptacle adapted to receive cosmetics, as powder, rouge and the like and slidable into andout of the case between closed and open positions, means to'lock the receptacle in its open position, means in its closed position within the case, and means to start the receptacle toward open position on Q the second locking means beingreleased.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following detailed description. taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of the invention is shown. However it is to be understood that the invention is'not limited to the details disclosed butincludes all such variations and modifications as fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims to which claims reference should be had for a definition of the invention.

The normal tendency of the end portions of the spring 27 is to move outwardly away from the walls 17 of the body of the case. The location of the stop lugs 29 on the springs 27 is such that the pair of lugs at the front or forward ends of the springs are positioned to enter the openings 32 when the receptacle is within the case, and the pair of lugs at the rear or inner ends of the springs are positioned to enter said openings when the receptacle is in open or extended position relative to the case.

With this arrangement it will be obvious that as the receptacle is moved into the case the cover 12 of the receptacle is closed on the body 11 thereof and when the receptacle reaches its inner most position the springs will act to dispose the front pair of lugs 29 in the openings 32. Since the straight sides 30 of the lugs are disposed forwardly they will be in engagement with the forward edges of the openings and casual movement of the receptacle out of the case will be prevented. When it'is desired to open the vanity box the lugs projecting through the openings 32 will be depressed into the case and a spring 33 secured against the rear wall 8 of the case as by rivets 34, will act to start the receptacle toward open position.

Movement of the receptacle out of the case will be limited since the rear pair of lugs 29 will enter the openings 32 when they arrive opposite the openings, and since the relatively straight side 30 of these lugs is their-front side causal movement of the receptacle entirely out of the case will be prevented. When it is desired to move the receptacle into the case it is but necessary to apply pressure to the two parts in a manner to telescope them since the inclined surface 31 of the rear lugs 29 will then engage the rear edge of the openings 32 and the springs will be pressed against the side walls 1'7 of the body of the receptacle, the lugs moving into the case 5. From the foregoing description it will be apvanity box of the present invention may be made up in any desired shape either to resemble a book or otherwise. Further, it will be apparent that the case 5 may be colored or ornamented as desired. It will be understood that by simply depressing the front pair of lugs 29 through the openings 32 in the case the receptacle will be started toward open position by the spring 33 and that as the receptacle moves toward open position the spring hinges 13 will act to raise the cover 12 of the receptacle to open position. As before explained this cover is moved to closed position by the movement of the re ceptacle into the case andthis movement will take place on the case and receptacle being pushed toward each other in a'manner to telescope them.

Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:

1. In a vanity box, a case, a receptacle adapted,

to receive cosmetics, said receptacle slidable into and out of said case between open and closed positions, said case having an opening in a wall thereof, a spring carried by the receptacle, a lug operated by the spring, and said lug adapted to enter the opening in the case when the receptacle is within the case to secure the receptacle in closed position said lug extending sufficiently into the opening to be. accessible from the outside of the box and be engaged by a finger of the operator to displace it from the opening to permit the receptacle to move outwardly of the case.

2. In a vanity box, a case member, a receptacle member adapted to receive cosmetics, said second member slidable into and out of the first member between open and closed positions, one of said members having an opening, a spring pressed lug carried by the other of said members and adapted to enter the said opening to secure the receptacle member against casual movement out of the case member when the receptacle member is in one of its positions, said lug being accessible from the outside of the box and adapted to be engaged by a finger of the operator to displace it from said opening to permit the receptacle being moved to the other of its positions.

3. In a vanity box, a case, a receptacle adapted to receive cosmetics, said receptacle slidable into and out of said case between open and closed positions, said case having an opening in a wall thereof, a spring secured to a wall of the receptacle, a lug carried by the spring, and said lug adapted to enter the opening in the case to secure the receptacle against. casual movement .outwardly of the case when the receptacle is in open position.

4. In a vanity box, a case, a receptacle adapted to receive cosmetics, said receptacle slidable into and out of said case between open and closed positions, said case having an. opening in a wall thereof, a spring secured intermediate its ends to a wall of the receptacle, a lug on each end portion of the spring, one of said lugs adapted to enter the opening in the case when the receptacle is in closed position whereby to secure it in such position, and the other of said lugs adapted to enter the opening in the case when the receptacle is in open position whereby to secure the receptacle against casual movement outwardly of the case.

5. In a vanity box, a case, a receptacle adapted to receive cosmetics, said receptacle slidable into and out .Of said case between open and closed positions, said case having an opening in a wall thereof, a spring carried by the receptacle, a lug on said spring and adapted to enter the opening in the case when the receptacle is within the case to secure the receptacle in closed position, said lug being accessible from the outside of the case and adapted to be engaged by a finger of the operator :to displace it from the opening, and means adapted to start said receptacle toward open position on said lug beingdisplacedfrom the opening in the case.

6. In a vanity box, a case, a receptacle adapted to receive cosmetics and movable into and out of said case between open and closed positions, means forming a compartment in said receptacle, a container pivoted at one end'in said compartment and open at its other end and said container adapted to receive a lipstick and adapted to be moved on its pivot to dispose its free end out of the compartment to permit removal and insertion of the lipstick.

7. In avanity box, a case member, a receptacle member adapted to receive cosmetics, said receptacle member slidable into and out of said case member between open and closed positions, one of said members having an opening, a spring secured intermediate its ends to the other member, a lug on each end portion of the spring, one of said lugs adapted to enter the opening when the receptacle member is in closed position, the other of said lugs adapted to enter said opening when the receptacle member is in open a position whereby to secure the receptacle member against the casual movement outwardly of the case member, and said second lug adapted to permit movement of the receptacle member into the case member from open to closed position on the members being pressed toward one another. s

In a vanity box, a case, a receptacle adapted to receive cosmetics, said receptacle slidable into and out of said case between open and closed positions, said case having an opening in a wall thereof, a' pair of spring pressed lugs carried by said receptacle, one of said lugs adapted to enter the opening in the case when the receptacle is in closed position whereby to secure it in such position, and the other of said lugs adapted to enter the opening in the case when the receptacle is in open position whereby to secure the receptacle against casual movement outwardly of the case. i

9. In a vanity box, a case member, a receptacle member adapted to receive cosmetics, said second member slidable into and out of the first member between open and closed positions, one of said members'having an opening, a pair of spring pressed lugs carried by the other of said members, one of said lugs adapted to enter said opening when the receptacle member is in closed position whereby to secure it in such position, and
