Description
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS CHAMPION AND T. MOTLEY, OF VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
MODE OF FASTENING LETTERS TO SIGN-BOARDS, &C.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,374, dated June 14, 1869'.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS CHAMPION and THOMAS MOTLEY, of the city and county of lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Fastening Letters to Sign-Boards or to Any other Material; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings of the same, making part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a front elevation of a letter embracing our improvement. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the same showing the shanks and projections. Fig. 3 shows the projections against, and the shank in the board. Fig. l shows a wrought shank before it is cast into the projection. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a flat projection with its solid cast shank. Fig. 6 is a hole into, or through the boss or projection from the back of letters for screws, nails, or rivets.
The nature of our invention and improvement consists in casting or placing on the back of letters out of sight projections or bosses, with solid shanks or points cast therefrom, or wrought shanks may. be cast in the projections or bosses, or holes may be made into, or through the projections, to fasten by screws, nails, or rivets.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we proceed to describe its construction, we make our letters of any kind of met-al, or of any suitable material and of various forms and sizes to suit the fancy of individuals, with projections either' made solid or placed on the back of letters to give them the desired prominence and uniformity, fastened to the board gro-und work or material support by a solid cast shank from the boss, or any shaped projection, out of sight behind the letter, or a wrought shank may be placed in the mold to be cast fast in the projection to be driven into or through the board and clench, or a hole may be made Afrom the back of the letter into the projection, or through it, which pro; jection may be made of various forms to fasten by screws, nails, or rivets either from the back of the board or from the front of the letter either mode may be alone, or with another, or all of them together.
The advantages of fastening letters by this mode for the various purposes is its cheapness, durability, facility for repainting, and susceptibility of changing the letters to spell various other names with the same letters.
What we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The placing or casting on the back .of letters, projections with solid cast or Wrought Shanks therefrom.
2. We claim holes in said projections to fasten by screws, nails, or rivets substantially as described.
