Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN SMITH, OF DORCI-IESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
ATTACI-IING BONNETS T0 SAILS.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knoWn that I, JONATHAN SMITH, of Dorchester, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Method of Attaching Bonnets to J ibs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and letters of reference marked thereon, in Which- Figure l is a metallic gromet similar to those now ordinarily used except the hole is oval instead of round. Fig. 2 is an edge- Wise view of a metallic gromet With a knob attached either solidly or to turn in the gromet, the knob having a hole A through Which a lacing could be rove.
The oval gromet is intended to be attached to the jb with the hole in the horizontal position, and the gromet With the knob to the bonnet With the knob in a perpendicular 26,935, dated January 24, 1860.
position. In attaching the bonnet to the jib it is intended to turn the knob sufficiently to introduce the knob through the oval hole when it returns to a position across the hole of the oval gro1net, thereby preventing it from coming out. Then the knob is put in to swivel, a line is intended to be rove through the hole to prevent them from co1ning out.
Figs. 3 and t are an edgewise and end view of a knob to be used for the saine purposes Without a lacing.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The oval form of the groniet and the form of the knob attachment and method of using them as adapted to ibs or other sails.
JONATHAN SMITH.
