Description

UNITED STATES EMILIE POHL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
PATENT OFFICE.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,155, dated June 21, 1881.
Application filed Apxil28, 1881. (Model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILIE POHL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improvement in corsets to be worn by mothers during the period of nursing their infants.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a view of the corset. Fig. 2 is a view of one of the breast-pockets detached.
The letter A designates the corset, which is provided with detachable breast pocket B. These pockets, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, are provided with two buttons, 0, on each side, and at the lower extremity with an extension or point, (I, which is made reasonably stiii' by means of two or more bones, reeds, or steels, d, which are inserted in the center of the front of the pocket and extend down into the point. At the extremity of this pointd a tape or string, 0, is attached. Elastic or flexible tabs f, each containing a button-hole, are secured to the corset in suitable positions to permit of attachment to the buttons, and a socket, g, is formed in any suitable manner, one on each side of the corset, at that part which comes just below each of the breasts. This socket is of shape and size to adapt it to receive the point at on the breast-pocket. At the lower part of the socket, on the outer side of the corset, an eyelet, e, is secured, through which the tape or string 6 passes.
The corset is used in the following manner:
When it is desired to put the infant to the.
breast one side of the breast-pocket is unbuttoned, which permits the said side to be raised slightly to withdraw the point 01 from the socket, and the pocket'may be then readily turned to one side, as shown in Fig. 1. The withdrawal of the point from the socket causes the tape or string to be drawn partly through the eyelet 6', but leaves the end of the string still projecting from the eyelet. To replace the pocket to its position, first turn it over to the position for covering the breast, then draw on the depending end of the string, which serves to direct the point (I to a position into and within the socket. Each flexibletab then brought over a button. For use 1n this manner to permit the unloosening of one side of the pocket only, the arrangement of the point, socket, eyelet, and string is very convenient.
It will be seen the pocket which covers the breast may be detached entirely or partially.
The stiffening,,also, of the lower part of the pocket, which extends into the point, as shown and described, serves to make a very close connection of the detachable pocket with the corset at that part which comes immediately below each breast, and thereby effectually supports the breasts and gives great comfort to the wearer.
It is immaterial what the formof the breastpocket may be. In the present example its top edge is coincidentwith the top edge of the front of the corset; but the tops of these pockets may extend up in a half-circular shape,
thereby to serve as a form for the bosom.
1 am aware that corsets have heretofore been shown in which the detachable breast-pocket has its lower end shaped to fit into pockets attached to the corset. My arrangement, how-. ever, is an improvement on this.
Having described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the 8 5 I United States-,
A corset having a detachable breast-pocket, provided with stays d at its central portion, extending to a point, (I, at its lower extremity,
having a string, 0, attached to the point, and 0 EMILIE POHL.
