This invention relates in general toa cap stay,

vide a removable stay as a part of the cap frame structure to extend upwardlyat the front of the cap for distending the cover, if desired, er removable if a soft cover is preferred.

A further object of the invention is to provide a removable stay for an interchangeable cap structure in which the front ornament is secured for also maintaining the stay in proper position.

A further object of the invention is to provide a stay structure of sufficient rigidity to support the front of the cap in raised position, and also sufhciently flexible to provide a curved roll or top effect for engaging the cap cover.

Military caps having head band and vizor frames with removable interchangeable covers have heretofore been provided so that several different styles of covers may be used with the same frame. Some military organizations Wear their caps with the front cover raised or extended upwardly, while in other services, it is desirable to have the front of the cap arranged in a soft roll.

The present invention provides a construction which may utilize the same cap cover and frame for either of the above services, and also provides additional supporting means for the cap ornament usually worn at the front of the cap.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, a cap structure is shown having a flexible outer band I usually made of stiff buckram covered with cloth with a vizor II at the front an'd a soft cloth finishing roll I2 along the lower edge of the band. Extending inwardly from the supporting band Ill is a cushioned sweat band I3 of any desired construction and size. I

At the ends of the vizor in the cap frame are 2 Claims'. (CL2-e198) grommets I4 to receive fastening buttons I4 inserted therethrough at the ends of a vizor strap I 5 for holding the strap in place.

The cap cover I6 may be of any desired material and may be of 4dilierent colors for ordinary or dress service, so that the same frame may be used for these different covers. The front of each cover is somewhat higher than the rear, and extending downwardly from the top structure is a exible band Il of a size to t closely over the stiff upstanding band I0 of the cap frame. At the sides of the band I1 are grommets I8 registering in position with the grommets I4 of the frame so that the fastening buttons I4 are inserted through the grommets I8 in securing the cap cover in place.

At the front of the cap frame and secured to the front of the stiffened band I0 is a strap 20 preferably secured at the ends only by rivets or grommets 2|, leaving the interior space between the ends entirely unobstructed and forming with the adjacent edge of the band I0, a receiving slot for the lower end of a stay 22.

This stay has a stiffening layer 23 such as buckram supporting a felt pad 24 between it and an upright fabric support 25 having metal strips 26 in its side edges. At the top is a crosspiece 21 comprising a metal strip 28 enclosed in a fabric cover 29, the entire structure being enclosed in outside cover sheets 30, and a top margin cover 3I which secures the crosspiece 21 in place in a slightly rounded condition, turned over at the top and rounded downwardly from the center to form a shaped upper edge at the top of the stay for engaging the inside of the cap cover and always supporting it in a smooth curve.

At the central portion of the stay is a grommet 32 which is inserted through the covers, through the buckram sheet 23 and through the upright support 25 and also the felt packing 24 for holding all of the parts together. The stay is somewhat wedge-shaped, smaller at the bottom and rounded at the top, adapted to be inserted in the space between the strap 20 and the band I0, the grommet 32 registering with a grommet 33 in the front portion of the cap so that the threaded stem 34 of a cap ornament 35 at the front of the cap may be inserted therethrough and engaged from the inside of the cap by a threaded lock nut 36.

With this construction, the/stay may be inserted from the inside of the cap without removing the cover of the cap from the frame. The stay is adjusted until its grommet 32 registers with the grommet 33 of the cap, and the cap ornament is inserted therethrough and locked changes may be made without departing from.

1. A exible stay for distending'the front. of

a hat cover with respect to a supporting frame therefor, the said stay comprising a wedge-shaped assembly of flexible materialincluding an outer cover having a top edge binding, a layer of stiffening material Within and conforming tothe' shape of the cover, an upright fabric support Within the cover and having metal strips in its opposed side edges, a pad within the cover disposed between the layer of stiiening material and the upright fabricsupport, and a grommet extending through the cover, layer of stiiening material, pad, and upright fabric support for holding them all together.

2. A stay for supporting the front of a cap vcover relative to a cap frame, comprising 4a -file of this patent: 1
