1 Claim. (Cl. 2-199) This invention relates to an insert for maintaining a cap and the like in correct formation.

The invention primarily comprehends an insert for an oiiicers field cap and the like which snugly fits continuously about the inside of the upstanding wall thereof so as to provide a support therefor and maintain the crown in regulation formation.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an insert of said character which is fashioned from a length of sheet material and which is adapted to be adjustably secured together in band formation for varying the size of the band so that the same may snugly fit against the upstanding wall of the cap.

Still another object of the invention is to provide an insert which is adjustable whereby the same may be made larger or smaller to fit dilferent sizes of hats.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawings in which the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated.

Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the insert in plane formation before securing the same in band formation.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the invention is illustrated in its application to a cap such as an officers field cap which is formed with an upstanding peripheral wall 11, a plane forwardly sloping top wall 12 and a peak 13. A flap 14 is secured to the bottom edge of the peripheral wall 11 which extends about the sides and the rear thereof for use in cold weather for covering the ears and which is adapted to be inturned in parallel relation with the peripheral wall 11 when not in use.

The cap 10 is provided with an insert 16 which corresponds to the shape and formation of the upstanding peripheral wall 11 so as to engage against the inside face thereof to support the said wall in upstanding stiffened relation and to retain the top of the cap against sagging and the top wall 12 in forwardly sloping formation. The insert 16 is fashioned from stiif sheet material to provide an elongated strip which is formed with rectangular shaped

17 and 18 of substantially the same width and intermediate the said end portions the upper and

lower edges

19 and 20 of the strip converge inwardly to the medial portion 21 forming the narrowest portion of the strip.

In order to secure the insert in band formation so as to render it adjustable for accommodating different sizes of hats and for adjustably securing the same snugly against the inner face of the upstanding peripheral wall 11, the

17 and 18 of the strip are provided with interengageable fastening means for securing the same together in overlapped relation to permit relative adjustment of the ends. As illustrated, the end 17 of the strip is formed with an elongated slot 23 located substantially medially between the upper and lower edges thereof and adapted to slidably engage in said slot is a threaded stud 24 affixed to the end 18 of the strip in longitudinal alignment with the slot 23. 17 and 18 in overlapped relation and when so arranged a threaded stud 26 provided in the end 17 is inserted through an opening in the end 18 which may he punched as desired or a plurality of openings 27 may be provided for selectively receiving the 331d 26 which is secured therein by tightening of the nut While the preferred form of the invention has been illustrated and described herein, it is to be understood that the same is not so limited and the invention will cover and include any and all forms which fall within the purview thereof.

What is claimed is:

A stiifening band adapted to be arranged within a cap against the peripheral side wall thereof for stiffening the same consisting of an elongated strip of stiff material having end portions formed with parallel upper and lower edges and an intermediate portion tapering along the up per and lower edges toward the middle of the strip, one of said end portions having an elongated slot and the other end portion having a stud slidable in said slot with the end portions disposed in overlapping relation, said end portions being relatively adjustable to dispose said stud at any desired position in said slot for varying the size of the hand, one of said end portions having a stud adjacent one of the longtiudinal edges thereof and the other of said end portions having a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings adapted to be selectively engaged by said last mentioned stud for securing the overlapped end portions in fixed adjusted position so as to expand the side wall of the cap, and said studs having heads adapted to be removed for disconnecting the end portions of the band to permit of the removal of the band from the cap for use of the cap independently of the band.
