Description
June 3, 1947. c. w. HENSON SAFETY POCKET Filed NOV. 16, 1945 INVENTOR.
Patented June 3, 1947 lTED STATE-S PATENT OFFICE r SAFETY POCKET Charles W. Henson, Lawrenceville, Ga.
Application November 16, 1945, Serial No. 629,027
2 Claims.
This invention relates to apparel and more particularly to safety pockets forming a part of mens shirts.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a safety pocket for shirts embodying an inner pocket and an outer pocket, the openings of the pockets being so arranged with respect to each other, that the inner pocket will catch articles held in the main pocket, when the person wearing the shirt leans forwardly to cause the articles to gravitate therefrom, thereby preventing loss of articles from the pocket.
An important object of the invention is to provide the outer pocket with an inclined edge so arranged that it will guide articles from the main pocket into the inner pocket when the pocket is inverted.
Still another object of the invention is to provide an inner pocket which is constructed to bulge within the outer pocket, so that the open end of the inner pocket will lie directly in the path of travel of articles passing from the pocket accidentally.
With the foregoing and other objects in View.
which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating a shirt equipped with a safety pocket constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged view partly broken away to illustrate the relation of the inner pocket with respect to the inclined wall of the outer pocket.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view through the pocket.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 indicates a shirt formed with pockets constructed in accordance with the present invention.
The safety pocket forming the subject matter of the present invention embodies an outer pocket section 6 which is secured to the shirt by a line of stitching extending along the upper, lower and one side edge of the outer pocket section, the inner side edge of the outer pocket section being open or free from the shirt, providing an entrance opening 8 at the side of the pocket. The reference character 9 indicates the inner pocket and embodies a length of cloth material substantially triangular in formation, one edge thereof being secured to the outer pocket section 6, along the edge of the entrance opening 8, by the line of stitching Ill. The upper end of the inner pocket is secured to the shirt proper by the line of stitching 1. The lower inner edge of the inner pocket section 9 is loose or free from the shirt 5 and the outer pocket section, providing a pocket with the outer section. In the construction of the inner pocket section 9, the width of the cloth material of which it is constructed, is greater than the distance between the points where the inner pocket section connects with the outer pocket section, so that the inner pocket section is bulged, as clearly shown by Figure 3 of the drawing. Because of the bulge in the inner pocket section, the inner pocket section is extended across the path of travel of an article which would pass from the pocket, when the person wearing the shirt equipped with the pocket, leans forward.
From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, an article held within the pocket can only be removed by inserting the hand in the pocket and picking the article from the pocket.
Because of the inclined construction of the upper rear edge of the pocket, it will be seen that articles passing towards the entrance opening of the pocket, will be guided into the inner pocket section.
What is claimed is:
1. A safety pocket for apparel, comprising a main pocket embodying an outer pocket section secured to the apparel, along the upper, lower, and one side edge only of the outer pocket section, providing a side entrance opening for the main pocket, an inner pocket secured within the main pocket, the open side of the inner pocket being disposed within the main pocket, said inner pocket being of a width greater than the width of the main pocket, whereby said inner pocket bulges and extends across the main pocket, closing the entrance opening thereof, and the open side of the inner pocket lying within the path of travel of articles moving by gravity from the pocket, when the pocket is inverted.
2. A safety pocket for apparel, comprising a main pocket embodying an outer pocket section secured to the apparel, along the upper, lower and one side edge only of the outer pocket section, providing a side entrance opening for the main pocket, said outer pocket section having its rear edge curved upwardly and forwardly and then REFERENCES CITED downwardly toward the front of the outer pocket section, providing an offset in the main pocket, The following references are of record in the an inner pocket secured within the main pocket, fil of thi patent;
