Claims. (01. 16484.5)
This invention relates to tape dispensers of the portable or hand type and of the character that may be rigidly aifixed to a stationary mounting if desired.
The primary aim of the instant invention is to proVide a dispenser of the aforementioned character which has as a component part thereof, novel and unique means for revolvably supporting a roll of tape and for severing a length thereof,
ing from one side thereof. This flange 20 is incomplete and ends as shown in Fig, 1 to provide an opening 22 through which the tape may pass when a length of the same is to be withdrawn from the roll IE.
An extension 24 integral with member I4 lies in the same major plan therewith and projects radially therefrom to present a head 26 opposed to op ning 22.
after the said length has been withdrawn from A number of radial, integral ribs 28 are formed the roll. on the inner side of member I 4 to engage the side This invention has for a further object the of tape roll I!) and to reduce the friction to a provision of a tape dispenser, moldable from plasimum One Of the ibs 8 s e t ded as at tic or similar substance, and capable of being as- 30 to reinforce tongue 24, and all of these ribs sembled without the use of a number of securing join annular shoulder 3| at the base of trunnion elements or other means that would. add to the l2. expense of an otherwise inexpensive article of Head 26 has a p t th of W ich is dovemanufacture, tail in transverse cross section. This portion An even further object of this invention is to 3 remov bly receives a s e ng b ade 34 formed provide a, dispenser for rolled tape which has-asa as detailed in Fig; nd includes a pair of cutcomponent element thereof, an unique and novel ting edges 36; These ed s 35 intersect the pat severing blade disposed in a place which is markof travel of tape it] and project laterally from the edly an extended distance to one side of the housinner face of tongue 24. Thus, the tape may be ing for the tape roll and in such fashion as to perdrawn against either cutting edge 36 after the mit the quick severing of alength of tape, regard- 25 desired length thereof has been removed from lessly of the relative positions of the dispenser the roll Id thereof within housing l8. and the user thereof by the simple expedient of A coepelating e r or 38 is disc-shaped reversing the direction of rotation of the roll in and shouldered as at to cooperate with flange its housing. 2a in closing housing It and holding the roll of Further and more specific objects of the in- 39 tape ID on trunnion i2. Friction fit is sufficient vention will appear during the course of the folto hold this member I6 in place but if desired any lowin specification, referring to the accompanysuitable means such as screws or machine bolts, ing drawing, wherein: not here shown, may be employed to hold the two Fig. 1 i a top plan View f tape dispenser emside member l4 and I 6 respectively in assembodying the present invention. bled relation.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through Reverting again to head 26, it is notable that the dispenser taken on line II-II of Fig, 1 and the o ail shaped portion 32 thereof, is inlooking in the direction of the arro tegral with an enlarged portion having inclined Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on faces 42 serving as g id t w d he tWO Cutting i 11 11 of Fig 1; and -10 edges. The severing blade 34 has sharpened or Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view S w-toothed cutting edges 36 and springs to place tak n on li IV IV of Fi 2, by slipping the dove-tail central element thereof The component parts of the dispenser are pref- Over the dove-tail portion 32 f ead 5- erably cast or otherwise formed of plastic mae at l f w h t severing b ade 54 terial to present a light, durable and inexpensive 4 is o s e en nou h to yieldably mainhousing for the roll of tape l0, which is of contain the blade n place d 1She Same y be ventional character and may be purchased on the neWed as often as desired. M mber Is i qui k y open market. detached from flanges 20 when a new or fresh roll This roll of tape has a central opening for the of tape 9!! is to be a y p d. reception of a trunnion I2 molded integrally with FM p n n I9 ei scr ws when the disone of the pair of opposed members I 4 an I6 penser is secured in position on the horizontal that cooperate in producing a closed housin it surface of a table or the like. The dispenser for the roll 10. may be either to the right or left of the operator Member I4 is substantially disc-shaped and has and yet used without alteration. Head 26 is so a laterally extending marginal flange 20 project- 55 formed as to hold the free end of tape ID in a position for grasping when either edge 36 or 26 is employed.
As illustrated, tape H] has been severed by edge 36 but if desired, the roll of tape may be reversed to have the coated side facing edge 26 and, therefore, the face 42 adjacent thereto will contact and hold the tape available for grasping.
The tape roll turns about the trunnion l2 and rides upon the upper faces of shoulder 3| and ribs 28 and 30. The length of tape in between opening 22 and head 26 is always exposed and may be grasped with ease.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
l. A dispenser for rolled tape comprising a pair of opposed members forming a housing; a trunnion on one of the members, within the housing to rotatably receive the tape roll; an extension on one of the members disposed radially with respect to the trunnion to a free end an appreciable distance beyond the other member; a head formed on the free end of said extension; and a substantially U-shaped instrument for severing the tape frictionally gripping the head of the extension, said instrument having a pair of blades projecting in opposite directions from the medial line of the extension and in lines parallel with the axis of the said trunnion.
2. A dispenser for rolled tape comprising a pair of opposed substantially disc-shaped members forming a housing; a lateral marginal flange on one side of one of the members extending partially around the edge thereof; an extension projecting from the said one member at that portion of the edge thereof not having the flange therealong; a trunnion on the said one side of the one member for receiving a roll of tape; a plurality of radial ribs on the said one side of the one member; a head on the free end of the extension; and a tape severing blade on the head.
3. A dispenser for rolled tape comprising a pair of opposed disc-shaped members; a flange provided with an outlet opening bridging the distance between the members at the edges thereof; a trunnion integral with one of the members at its axis; a plurality of ribs integral with each member on the inner faces thereof and extending radially from the trunnion; a tongue integral with one of the members, extending radially therefrom and in the same plane therewith at the outlet opening in the flange; and a severing blade on the free end of the tongue, said severing blade being mounted on the tongue with the cutting edge thereof projecting laterally from the side of the tongue adjacent to the other member.
4. A dispenser for rolled tape comprising a pair of opposed members forming a housing, one of said members having an opening in one end thereof; a trunnion on the other member, within the housing to centrally and rotatably receive the tape roll; a tongue on said other member extending from the open end of the housing and terminating in an end free from said one member; and a severing blade on the free end of said tongue, said severing blade having an edge on each side of the longitudinal axis of the tongue.
5. A dispenser for rolled tape comprising a pair of opposed members forming a housing, one of said members having an opening in one end thereof; a trunnion on the other member, Within the housing to centrally and rotatably receive the tape roll; a tongue on said other member extending from the open end of the housing and terminating in an end free from said one member; and an instrument for severing the tape on the free end of said tongue, said instrument having a pair of blades projecting laterally in opposite directions from the medial line of the tongue.
