Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD BRAYTDN, OF HOMER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO JOSEPH MAPLETHORPE, OF SAME PLACE.
CARRIAGE-TOP PRQ P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,026, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed January 27, 1881.
To all whom it may concern forged or welded to the side rail.
Be it known that I, RICHARD BRAYTON, of the town of Homer, in the county of Cortland and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage- Top Props and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in adj ustable shifting-railjoint-props for carriage-- prop secured to said rail, as will be more fully hereinafter specified.
E indicates the seat-iron, which accomplishes the double purpose of supporting the rail and providing the means of adjusting the jointprop D.
Heretofore, in the construction of carriagetops, the joint-prop has been made permanently In my improvement this prop is a separate piece detachable from the rail and capable of adjustment by moving it either backward or forward on the rail. manufacture, it possesses the advantage over the old style of adaptability to other parts in the trimming and covering of the top, and also in the readjustment for the purpose of tightening the joints when they become loose by wear. H
The joint-prop D is provided with an eye,w, through which the rail. passes. The eye 0:
Thus, aside from the economy of i (No model.)
opens through a hollow hub, to, projecting downward therefrom, which hub has screwthreadsinside.
The hub a passes through the slot S in the seat-iron E. By means of a set-screw, F, passing through slot S and hub a to rail 0, the prop D is firmly secured to the seat-iron E and rail 0 at any desired point within the scope of the slot S. y 5
It will be observed that the prop D, by reason of the hub a and the set-screw F, may be adjusted laterally in the slot S of the seatbracket at will, and may, by reason of such adjustability, be made to accommodate ditt'ercut relations and constructions.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the principle or sacrificing the advantages of my invention, the essentialfeature of which is the .adjustability of the prop on the rail in a lateral direction at will by the manipulation of a single screw at each of the rear seat-corners.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 70.
1. In a carriage-top, a rail joint-prop, adapted to be adjusted laterally at will and secured at any desired point by single set-screws, as and for the purpose specified. I
2. A seat-bracket, having an elongated slot, combined with an adjustable rail joint-prop, operating in said slot and adapted to be secured at any desired point within the range thereof at will by set-screws, as specified.
3. The combination of the seat-bracket E. having slot S, the prop D, having eye a and hub a,'the set-screw F, and rail 0, all constructed, arranged, and operating as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own 1 hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD BRAYTON.
Witnesses:
ARTHUR L. KNIGHT, H. F. TURNER.
