Description
UNTTED STATES EECE.
PATENT COMBINED LATCH AND LOCK..
SPECIFICATIQN forming" part of Letterslatent No. 236,189, dated vJanuary 4, 1881.
Application lcd October 1, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD SNYDER and ISRAEL ADAMS, both ot' Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachuand in which- Figure lis a sectional view of a portion ot' a door with our im proved latch and lock applied thereto, the devices being shown in side view with the side plate of the latch-case removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section at the p0- sitionindicated by line am, Fig. l. Fig.3 is a horizontal sectional view through the latch-case and knob-spindle. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view, showing the locking-bolt. Fig.5 shows the form of the key, and Fig. 6 shows the key-hole plate.
The object of our invention is to make a cheap, serviceable, and secure latch and lock adapted for use on the doors of buildings; and our invention consists in mechanism constructed and organized as shown in the accompanying drawings, and applied to use as herein described, the particular subject-m atter claimed being definitely specified.
A denotes the door; B, the face-plate; C, the latch-bolt, arranged within a cylindrical case, B', fastened to the face-plate B.
D indicates the follower, through which the knob-spindle E passes, and by means ot' which the latch-bolt G is drawn back when the knob is rotated. The followerD is connected to the rear end of the latch by a link, F, one end otl which is attached by a pin, d, to the side of the follower D, and its other end looped over a pin, o, at the rear end ot' the latch-bolt G, as illustrated. A spring, G,is provided for throwing the latch-bolt C forward in the ordinary manner.
H indicates the lock-bolt, arranged below the latch-case, and working through an opening in the face-plate B. Said lock-bolt is of cylindrical form and runs directly in the wood A, Without other casing.
a slot in its upper side, into which a spur or It is provided withv (Model.)
projection, e, on the latch-case extends, and serves to prevent the boltHfrom working out of proper position. A space or recess, i, is formed on the under side of the bolt for the bit oi' the key to enter.
f Vorking within a suitable slot, l, near the rear end ot' the bolt H, is an arm, f, which eX- tends down from the follower-link F in the manner shown. This arm serves to throw forward the lock-bolt H by the latch action. The slot Z, when open, lets the arm f movev back without drawing the bolt H. A spring, J, is iixed to the side of the bolt to give friction for retaining the bolt from jarring out oi' adjustment.
L is a thumb-knob for moving the bolt by hand at the inner side of the door.
The key K is made, as in Fig. 6, with the bit centrally recessed to fit the ward in the recess i ot' the bolt. Variation can be effected by changing the form of the ward and recess il.
The key-hole I is made in the shape shown in Figs. l and 7, and is formed vby boring the hole I through the wood of the door, then sawing kerfs or slots m m to the right and left. The wood is then taken out above the kerfs to the bolt-recess. The lower side of the key-hole is on the solid wood, and the key is entered with the bit either to the right or left, according to the direction in which it is desired to move the bolt H.
The lock and latch are applied to the door by boring two auger-holes, M N, into the edge of the door at proper distance apart, then boring transversely through for the key-hole and knobspindle, also the space for the thumb-knob L. The wood between the holes M N is removed for a narrow space along the center, as at P, and the faceplate mortised into the edge of the door.
It will thus be seen that the labor of applying the lock and latch to the door is very slight, comparatively, while the wood of the door is but little cut away.
It will also be observed that the wood of the door serves in lieu of a case for the lock, that the mechanism is simple and cheap of application, while its effect in operation is that of roo a secure dead-holt or night-lock. The door is locked by the latch or knob, but requires to be unlocked by means of the key or the inside thumb-knob L.
What We claim as of our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the cylindrical latch-case, provided with the face-plate, latchbolt, and latch-operating mechanism, of a locking-bolt adapted to be let into a cylindrical opening directly in the wood of the door and arranged for locking by a movement of the latch mechanism, substantially as set forth.
2. The bolt H, having recesses and Ward i, and friction-spring J, as described, in combination with the door provided with the cylindrical opening or auger-hole N and the keyhole recess I m, formed substantially as set forth.
