MARIETTA, GEORGIA.
SASH-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,914, dated December 28, 1886.
Application filed September 7, 1886. Serial No.` 2112,917. (No model.)
.To all whom. it may concern.-
Beit known that I, ALBERT Y. LEAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Cobb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Sash Holders and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined sash-holders and sash-locks; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a horizontal section taken through the window-sash and the j amb ofthe window-frame, and also through the frame or casing of thesash holder and lock, showing the manner in which the latter is at-` tachedto the Window. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view -through the jamb of the windowframe and through the sash holder and lock, showing the window-sash in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail front elevation of the sash holder and lock, partly in section, on the line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the sash holder and lock, taken on the linez z of Fig. l.'
A represents the jamb of thewindow-frame,
D the window-sash. The latter is provided on its outer edge with a vertical series of notches, E, the said notches having their lower sides beveled, as shown in Fig. 2.
F represents the rectangular case of the sash holder and lock provided on its front side with a vertical plate, G.
H represents a bolt, having a front projecting end, h, which is beveled on 4its under side and extends through an opening made in the plate G. An arm, I, extends from the inner side of the bolt H, at the center of the latter and at right angles thereto, and in the outer end of the said arm is an opening, K.
L represents a spindle, which extends rearwardly from the arm I at a suitable distance from the bolt H, and parallel therewith. The 'rear end of this spindle extends through an opening made in the rear side of the case F. A pin, M, passes transversely through the projecting rear end of the spindle L, and bears against the rear side of the ease F, and a coiled extensile spring, N, is placed on the spindle L push-pin extends through the opening Koi' 6o the arm of the bolt, and is fastened thereto. The escutcheon is provided on its rear side with a sleeve, R, that enters a circular opening made in the stop G, and on the upper side of the said sleeve is a slot, S, which extends through the escutcheon and communicates with a vertical slot, T, which ,is in the stop-head. An offset or stop, V, is arranged vertically on the escutcheon on one side of the slot T, and a similar stop, W, is arranged horizontally on the escutcheon, as shown at Fig. 3. A lockpin, X, projects from one side of the push-pin, near the front end thereof, the said lock-pin being adapted to enter the slot T, and the extreme front end of the push-pin is reduced and screw-threaded, and thereby adapted for the attachment of a push-knob, Z, which is provided with an interiorly-threaded opening on its rear side.
The operation of my invention is as follows:.
The case Fis mortised into the jambA of the window-frame, as shown in Fig. l, and the end h of the bolt projects from the jamb and engages an opening, E, in the window-sash. In order to release the windowsash, so that it may be raised or lowered, the push-pin is turned so as to cause the lock-pin X to strike against the offset V. The lock-pin then aligns with ,the slot T, and the push-pin is pressed rearwardly against the resistance of the spring N, and the bolt is moved rearwardly in the case, as will be very readily understood. As soon ,as the pressure on the push-pin is released the springN returns the bolt and the push-pin to their normal position. V-hen the push-pin is turned so as to cause thelock-pin to bear against the offset or stop W, the bolt is locked inengagement with an opening in the sash.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a sash-fastener, the combination of the case F, the spring-actuated lockingbolt there- IOC in having the right-angled arm I, the pushpin having its inner end swiveled to the said arm and provided near its outer end with the lock-pin X, and the escutcheon in which the push-pin turns, having the stops Vand W, arranged at right angles to each other, and the slot S, alongside one of the said stops, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
2. In a sashfastener, the hollow case F, seated in a recess of the Window-frame and having the front plate, G, in combination with the locking-arm I, having the locking nib or projection H, extending through the plate G, the spring-actuated bolt L, connected to the arm I and working through the case F, and the push-pin O, connected to the locking-arm I and extending outward beyond the Windowframe, the bolt L,With its spring, and the locking-arm I, being concealed within the case F, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim theforegoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ALBERT Y. LEAKE.
