To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. GOLD- STONE, subject of the Kino of Great Britain, residing at Burks Falls, 1n the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in latches of that type which are commonly employed upon doors and other swinging closures, and the object of the invention is the provision of a lock embodying a novel construction whereby the same may be readily inserted within a circular opening bored in an edge of the door without the necessity of mortising the door in the usual manner.
The invention further contemplates a novel means for mounting and operating the locking bolt whereby the latch actuating mechanism may be held against movement when it is desired to lock the door.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanving drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a door having the latch mounted thereon, the door being broken away and the cover for the latch casing being removed. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the latch mechanism, the latch proper being removed and the locking bolt being thrown into operative position. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view showing the key as inserted within the casing previous to turning the same for throwing the locking bolt. Fig. 6 is a detail View of the latch, parts being separated. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the key.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral l designates the casing within which the latch mechanism is mounted, the said casing being formed with an open side which is normally closed by the cover 1u. Particular attention is directed to the fact that this casing 1 is circular in cross section, such a construction having the advantage of enabling the casing to be inserted within a circular opening bored in the edge of the door by any suitable means such as a brace bit. The outer end of the casing is provided with a plate 2 which is designed to fit against the edge of the door and to be secured thereto by screws or other suitable fastening means. A hub 3 is mounted within the casing 1 at an intermediate point in the length thereof, the said hub being formed upon its opposite sides with the usual bosses 3- received within corresponding openings in the back of the casing and the cover la. The rear portion of the hub 3 is flattened at 4 for coperation with the locking bolt 5, while the forward portion of the hub is provided upon one face with the outwardly projecting shoulders 6. For the purpose of turning the hub the usual spindle 7 is utilized which has an angular section and passes through a square opening in the hub, knobs 8 of any suitable construction being applied to the extremities of the spindle which projects beyond opposite sides of the door. It will also be observed that this spindle 7 passes through plates 9 secured to the sides of the door.
The latch bolt 10 is slidably mounted within the forward portion of the casing and has the rear end thereof bifurcated, the arms 10a of the bifurcation being provided at their extremities with the laterally projecting lugs 11 which engage the respect-ive shoulders 6 upon the hub. It will thus be obvious that by grasping one of the knobs S and turning the spindle 7 the hub 3 will be rotated in such a manner as to draw the latch bolt inwardly. The latch 12 slides freely through an opening in the end of the casing and is provided with a rearwardly extending ear 13 by means of which it is detachably secured to the extremity of the latch bolt 10, such a construction admitting of the reversing of the latch so that the device can be employed either in connection with a right or a -left hand door. For the purpose of holding the latch 12 normally in an operative position a spring 14 is utilized which surrounds the latch bolt l() and is interposed between the latch 12 and a shoulder 15 formed by contracting an intermediate portion of the casing. In the present instance this spring has an approximately conical formation, the forward end thereof being tapered and received between rearward extensions 16 at the top and bottom of the latch 12.
The locking bolt 5 is slidably mounted upon the bottom ofthe casing 1 at "the rear end thereof and is adapted to be movedint" contact with the flattened lportion of the hub 3 so as to lock the latter member against rotation. Projecting upwardly from the locking bolt 5 is a pin 17 designed to bere? ceived within either `one of a pair 'of openings 1S in a locking plate 19 which bears. yieldingly against the upper side of the holt.. andhasa limited amount of vertical move- :ment between the rear end of the Vcasing and a rib `2O projecting downwardly from the top vof the casing.v A. spring 21 interposed between the top of the casing and the locking plate tends to force the latter member downwardly against the locking bolt and when the pin 17 yis received within the forward opening 18 the locking bolt is held in operative position `against the flattened por-4 tion 4 of the hub 3, while when the pin is .received within the rear opening 18 the locking'bolt is held in an inoperative position and thelatch 12 may be withdrawn in the usualfmanner by grasping one ofthe knobs 8 .and turning the spindle. A notched or cutaway portion 22 is formed in the lower portion of the locking bolt .5 for the reception of a lkey 23 designed to be inserted through the usual key hole openings 24: in `the front and rear of the casing, the plates 9 fitted to the sides of the door being also shown in the present instance as provided 'with Aopenings .forrthe reception of the key. Opposite ends ofthe notch l22..are enlarged at 22a to form a clearance space for the two bits 25a upon the key, and these enlarged portions v122a of the notch extend upwardly to the top ofthe locking bolt .so that the bits of thevfkey may come in contact1 with` .the locking plate 19. .Should ythe locking bolt be in :an inoperative position when the key is inserted through the key-holes 24 and within the notch 22, when the key is turned the bits 23a thereof will move freely within the clearance lspaces formed Aby the enlarged ends 22a .of the notches .until they come into contact with the locking plate 19. A com tinued movement of the key after .contactwith the locking plate will lift the latter against the action .of the spring `21v until the pin 17 has been withdrawn from the opens ing 18, Aand will then engage .the locking :bolt to move the same forwardly against the flattened portion i of the hub. The pin 17 of the lockingbolt will then lbe in registry with the forward opening 18 and the spring `21 will force the locking plate 19 :again into contact with .the bolt. The yhub 3 is .thensecurely held against rotation :and the latch 12 'thereby locked in an Aoperative position. In releasing the hub 3 the key is inserted within the latch and -turnedin the opposite direction, .the bits 23a. thereof serving in an identical .manner :to first lift Athe locking plate `19 out of engagement with the pin 17 and then move the locking bolt rearwardly `untilthe said pin 17 enters the rear opening 18. As shown on the drawingithe key 23 is preferably formed in two sections which are hinged to each other so as to be folded and readily carried in the pocket, although such is not necessary vention. For cooperation with the latch 12 a latch plate 25 is secured .to the .door casingand-is formed with a socket .26 yto receive the latch and a beveled .lip '27 for cooperation with the beveled face of thelatch to force the samev within the casing when. the door is closed.
Having thus described .the invention, what is claimed as new isz.
1. In a latch, the vcombination of a 4latch bolt, a hub for operating the latch bolt, a slidable locking .bolt adapted to -enga, ;ethe hub to prevent the `rotation thereof, and a locking plate having aninterlocking connection with the locking bolt for holding the same either in an operative oran-inoperative position.
2. ln a latch, thecombina-tion of a latch bolt, a hub for operating the latch bol-t, a locking bolt yfor engagement with the yhub to prevent .rotation thereof, a pinprojecting from the locking bolt, and a lock-ing lplate formed with open-ings designed to receive the pinto hold the locking bolt yeither in an operative or an inoperative position.
