Description

(flo'Mode L) W- H. HART, Jr.
N-e e 'kt ie gmel No. 235,521. Patented Dec. 14, I880.
PIS-2- imam by m Y Y N.PETERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. n c,
.UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' WILLIAM H. HART, JR, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
NECKTlE-SHIELD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,527, dated December 14, 1880.
' Application filed July 3, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HART, J r., of the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of- Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Neckwear, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in
i which- Figures 1 and 2are face views of neckscarfs embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a view of the shield or support embodying my invention. Fig. 4 is a modification thereof. Fig. 5 is a section in line as as, Fig. 3. Figs. 6 and 7 are views of modifications.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. My invention consists of a scarf shield or support formed of card-board, cloth-covered board, or other light material, retained in curved form by means of a strip or piece of rigid material, which likewise strengthens the shield, without, however, depriving it of its required or desired flexibility.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a necktie or scarf shield or support formed of card-board, cloth-coveredpaper, or other light and flexible material, as well known. B represents atransversely-extendin g strip of metal or other rigid material, of curved form, to correspond to the molded or curved form of the shield orfscarf itself, and secured to the same, whereby, while the shield or scarf is oflight and flexible material, it is suflicientl y stifiened and retains its curvature, as desirable, for ilnparting a proper fit to the scarf on the neck.
The strip may be secured to the shield by passing its ends through openings in the shield or bending theends on the shield, or by riveting, sewing, gumming, or otherwise fastening the strip to the shield, and the strip may be covered by the lining of the shield or a piece of card-board or other material attached to the shield.
Another ad vantage of the stiffening and retaining pieces is the adaptability of using cheap stock for the shields or supports.
0 represents the neckband of the scarf or tie, one end whereof is connected to the shield, and the other end is adapted to engage with the pin or clasp of the shield, as is well known. To the band is secured a piece, D, of elastic material, which may be located at either end of the band, or between the ends thereof, so as to be continuous of the length of the band, forming, as it were, an expansible neckband.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
The neckwear-shield formed of flexible material, having a transversely-extending stiffening and retaining strip, B, of rigid material, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
