Description

Feb. 29, 1944. WHITE SLEEVE CONSTRUCTION Filed May 2, 1942 Patented Feb. 29, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SLEEVE CONSTRUCTION Lillian White, New York, N. Y.
Application May 2, 1942, Serial No. 441,421
1 Claim.
My invention relates to a sleeve construction and more particularly an insert to a sleeve construction to be used in connection with garments manufactured of light fabrics, for instance silk, rayon, cotton as used in the manufacture of women's dresses, gowns, morning gowns, etc.
It is a known fact that the sleeves in garments are subjected to considerable strain by the arm movements of the wearer.
Due to this fact the seams connecting the sleeves of a garment thereto most frequently break under the arms of the wearer whenever the garments are not manufactured of heavy fabrics. 1
One object of my invention is the provision of means to prevent the breaking of the seams connecting the sleeves of garments thereto by relieving the stress to which said seams are subjected.
Further objects of the invention will be apparent from the specification and the drawing in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a fragmentary nature'of a sleeve and the adjacent portion of a garment provided with my improved sleeve construction, the arm being raised to show the underarm area involving my improved sleeve construction.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing another kind of insert between the sleeve and the garment.
Fig. 3 is a pattern of an underarm insert prior to its application in place in the garment.
Fig. 4 is a similar view of another kind of an insert to be applied between the sleeve and the garment.
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the relationship of the parts as shown by Fig. 1 and Fig. 2.
In accordance with the present invention the garment I and the sleeve 2 are provided with a pair of exchangeable side elastic inserts 3 and 4 connected together and to be arranged on the lower part of the armhole 5, said inserts being made of one-way stretch material arranged to stretch vertically, when the arm of the wearer is raised.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 4 difierent kinds of inserts can be used according to my invention.
The inserts are composed of two elastic strips 3 and 4. The shape of said strips may be varied, however the insert as a whole composed of said strips has to be arcuated as shown in the drawing, to fit to the shape of the armhole and the sleeve. 7
The insert will be tapered to its ends.
The strips 3 and l are connected together by a seam 6. This seam may be formed in an elastic manner, e. g. it can be interrupted at several points to form holesl. Said holes being supposed to relieve the strain of the arm movements. On the other hand they will serve to give passage to air.
The seam 8 connecting part 4 of the insert with the sleeve 2 and the seam 9 connecting part 3 of the insert with the garment l, have to be very strong and not to be interrupted.
In this fashion the sleeve construction is produced which will give the utmost play with the minimum of wear.
When the arm is moved, the strain will be relieved by the action of the two elastic parts of the insert connected together by the elastic seam 6.
I have described preferred embodiments of my invention but it will be understood that various changes will be made without departing from the I scope of this invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A garment of the class made of light weight fabrics such as silk, rayon, cotton, etc. as used in the manufacture of women's dresses, gowns, morning gowns, and the like, said garment comprising body covering and sleeve elements and being provided with a cut-out in the body at the armhole and in the lower part of the sleeve, an insert arranged in said out out region and comprising two adjacent parts of one-way stretch material, said parts being connected by a longitudinal seam extending transverse of the direction of stretch, said seam being interrupted to form holes between said parts, said parts being shaped in a manner to form an arcuated article when connected together, and being attached to the garment in the said cut-out region and arranged to stretch vertically when the arm of the wearer of the'garment to which the insert is attached will be raised.
