This invention relates to garments and more particularly to a blank for use in the manufacture of upper garments.

An vobject of the invention is to simplify the manufacture of blouses, coats and similar garments by constructing them from a blank consisting of a single piece of material. It has heretofore been proposed to form a garment of a single piece of material with the two halves of the front extending from each side of the blank, the garment being sewed along the shoulder lines of the front and back sections to complete it. Such proposal, however., did not result in the production of a satisfactory garment because it was designed with armholes in the body below the shouder lines. When such garment was sewed along the shoulder lines, the sides of the garment lacked fullness and when the wearer raised an arm, the garment would ride up on that side of the body.

In the present invention I form a garment of a blank of a single piece of material and still provide the necessary fullness at the sides of the garment. I accomplish this by forming the portion of the blank which forms the arm openings in a substantially continuous curve with the shoulder portions, thus providing the necessary material at each side of the garment and to give the desired fullness. When the invention is applied to a sleeveless garment, it is completed by sewing the rear and front shoulder lines together. It can, of course, be applied to a sleeved garment by providing material for a sleeve extending from the edge of each arm opening and sewing the two side edges of these extensions to each other when the garment is assembled.

In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated one embodiment of the invention. In this showing:

Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the completed garment.

The blank from which the garment is made consists of a single piece of materialand is symmetrical, that is, the construction is the same on each side of the center line C and like reference characters will, therefore, be applied to the corresponding or similar parts. Generally speaking, the upper edge of the blank is curved on a radius from a center within the body of the blank and the lower edge I is curved on a substantially parallel but smaller radius. At the center of the upper edge I provide an arcuate recess 2 extending equal distances on each side of the center Cil 2 line C and forming the back of the neck portion. From the ends of the recess 2 the edge extends substantially in a. curve an equal distance on each side 3 forming the rear shoulder lines. In Fig. 1 I have illustrated the garment blank having sleeve portions 4 which extend from the body of the blank. In the manufacture of a sleeveless garment, the blank does not include these extensions and the edge extends as indicated by the dotted line 5 forming substantially a continuation of the curve 3. This edge 5 forms the arm opening when the garment is assembled. Beyond the portion 5 the edge extends as at 6 substantially in a continuation of the curve formed by the portions 3 and 5 and this portion forms the front shoulder line. At the outer end of the edge 6 I provide a recess 1 which forms the side and front of the neck portion. From this recess the side edges 8 extend to the lower edge I as indicated.

With a blank of the construction shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing and without the extensions II, the garment is assembled by folding it over with the edge portions 6 over the edge portions 3 and sewing them together as indicated at 9 in Fig. 2 of the drawing. This produces a sleeveless garment having the necessary fullness beneath the arm openings as indicated at II) in Fig. 2 of the drawing and the simplicity in the manufacture of the garment will be readily apparent, it being only necessary to sew the two edges 6 to the two edges 3 to complete the garment. When the garment is provided with sleeves, as indicated by the extension 4, the sleeves may be of either full arm length or short sleeves as desired. In such case when the garment-is folded the side edges II of the extensions which form the sleeves are sewed as indicated at I2 in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The provision of sleeves does not in any way interfere with the fullness at each side and the only additional step necessary in the manufacture of a sleeved garment is the formation of the seams I2 by sewing the edges II to each other. The front edges B may be provided with any suitable fastening means, such as buttons and buttonholes I3, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing.

While I have illustrated the invention applied to a ladys blouse, it may, of course, be used in connection with any type of garment and in the manufacture of garments for either sex.

I claim:

1. A garment blank having a lower edge and having substantially straight side edges extending from the lower edge, the upper edge of the blank at each side of the center comprising a series of curved portions forming a portion of the neck opening and a rear shoulder portion, a portion of the iront neck opening and a front shoulder portion, and an intermediate sleeve portion between the front shoulder portion and the rear shoulder portion.

2. A garment body comprising a back portion, sides and a front portion, the upper edge being curved to form the rear of the neck opening, the edge at each side of the neck curve being shaped to form a frearishoulder portion andthen extended outwardly to form a s'leeve, the edge beyond the sleeve extending in a curve to form the front shoulder portion and in another curve to form a. portion of the front neck portion, the

side edge being substantially straight and the ,l5

body being provided with a curved lower edge, the garment being completed by sewing the front and rear shoulder portions and the edges of the sleeves to each other.
