SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,890, dated November 2, 1880. Application filed April 9, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY P. STIGHTER, of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gommodes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to commodes, waterclosets, chamber-urinals, and all articles used for similar purposes; and my object is to provide a lid for such articles containing deodorizing material, with mechanism for discharging the same, so as to absorb or destroy all offensive and noxious odors and gases.

I attain my object by the mechanism and construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings. in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, and in which Figure l is a sectional view of an ordinary commode to which my improvement has been attached. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the lid, showing the construction and mechanism used; and Fig. 3 is a view of the bottom of the lid, showing perforations in the said bottom.

In the drawings, at Fig. 1, the lid 1 is shown fitted on the receptacle 3, which is fitted in the commode-body 2.

In Fig. 2, A is the lid proper, to which I secure the vessel B, the bottom of which is perforated, as shown in Fig. 3.

E is a guard-tube, in which the plunger 0 c and the spiral spring D work.

F is an ofisetin the lid A, to allow the spring room to be compressed, and G is an elastic washer to cushion the blow of the knob on plunger 0 c, 0 being a button or disk fastened to the end of the plunger for the purpose of preventing the escape of the spring when the plunger is drawn upward.

The operation of the device is as follows I place in the vessel 13 a suitable quantity of powdered deodorizing material and place the lid on the receptacle in the commode, as shown in Fig. 1. The plunger 0 c is then raised by means of the knob, which compresses the spiral spring D. By releasing the plunger the spring carries it down and the button Gstrikes the bottom of the vessel B with a sharp blow, which causes a quantity of the material contained in the vessel to pass through the perforations and into the receptacle beneath.

In the construction of my ii'nprovement I use a spiral spring and plunger to give the blow which discharges the deodorizer; but any device may be used for this purpose that causes the deodorizer to fall through the perforations.

An opening may be made in A, or the vessel B may be made so as to be readily detached and readjusted to A, for the purpose of refilling the vessel B with deodorizing material. Any deodorizing material in the form of powders may be used.

I claim The improved lid or cover for commodes. water-closets, chamber-urinals, or articles of similar use, herein shown and described, consisting of a lid or cover, A, vessel B, having perforated bottom, guard-tube E, plunger 0 c, spiral spring D, offset F, and elastic washer G, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
