UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELLENE A. BAILEY, OF ST. CHARLES, MISSOURI.
BOOT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,461, dated October 19, 1880.
Application filed May 26, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLENE Anon BAILEY, of St. Charles, in the county of St. Charles and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Boot, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved boot which is simplein arrangement, has a good fit, and is convenient in use.
The invention consists in a hoot provided with side seams, one of which is open at its lower end, and is provided with lacing, buttons, or a like device, so that it can be closed when the boot is on the wearers foot.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved boot. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The boot A is made of a front piece, B,a-nd a rear piece, 0, united by side seams, I) D. One of said seams-preferably the one on the inner sideis open at its lower end, and is provided with eyelets E E, through which the lace F F is passed to close the open part of the said seam.
The eyelets and lace may be replaced by buttons and button-holes or other suitable similar devices.
A tongue, G, is attached to the inner side (Model) of the boot, at the bottom of the opening of the seam, and covers the opening when the boot is laced, like the tongues of laced shoes.
The sides of the opening of the seam are separated as far as possible before passing the foot into the boot, so that the ankle can pass through very easily. The opening is then closed either by lacing or buttoning, the tongue G having been previously placed in front of the opening.
This boot tits to the foot, ankle, and calf very closely without painful or disagreeable pressure, and can be put on or taken oft with ease and convenience. It may be made of any desired size or any desired material. Used as a dress or stage boot it is made of light material with light sole; but for the use of schoolchildren or ladys walking-boot, then it should be made of heavier material.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The boot A, having the upper made of a front piece, B, and rear piece, 0, united by side seams, D, of which one is open at the lower end, and provided with lacing device, as shown and described.
ELLENE ALICE BAILEY.
