FUR-COVERED SLEIGH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,331, dated October 19. 1880.

Application filed February 25, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTIN S.-DAVIS, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sleighs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanyingdrawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention consists in a sleigh the body of which is wholly or partially covered with animal fur, said for being secured in position by having the edges project inward, and fastened by the same devices which secure the said body and the runner-frame together, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective view of a sleigh embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section and Fig. 3 a detailed section of a'part thereof, showing the fastening means.

A represents the bottom, B B the runners, G the body, and D the dash or dash-board, of a sleigh constructed in any of the known and usual ways.

The bodyO is provided with a fur covering, E, entirely surrounding the same. This covering is wrapped around the body, and when the body is then placed on the bottom A and fastened by screws, said screws also secure the covering firmly and neatly in its place. This covering may also be made so as to extend only over a part of the body-that is to say, the outside and upper edgesleaving the inside of the body to be finished in any other manner desired.

By my invention of providing a fur covering for sleigh-bodies I not only make the same attractive in appearance, but also materially reduce the cost. The body itself may be made of rough material without any elaborate finish, requiring no painting, &c. The paint will rapidly become soiled and wear off-so much so that it will only last for a couple of seasonswhereas the fur covering is not only cheaper originally than the painting of the body, but it will last a life-time.

The for constituting the covering can be removed, if desired, and used for other purposes.

The dash or dash-board D is also provided with a fur covering, F, made in the form of a bag and drawn over the dash-board, and it may be tacked or otherwise fastened or not, as desired.

The fur coverings for the sleigh-body and dash-board can be easily washed off when soiled without injury to the fur.

My invention is equally applicable to childrens sleighs as well as tolarge ones, and While it materially red noes the cost it makes the sleigh handsome, unique, and attractive in appearance.

If desired, an oil-cloth cover may be provided to go over the fur-covering to the dashboard.

The furcoverin g, being suggestive of warmth, adds materially to the msthetic appearance of the sleigh, thus combining ornamentation with utility in the low temperatures in which the device is used.

Animal skins having longer hair may be used to further ornament the edges if desired.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The sleigh-body herein described, covered with fur, said fur covering being held in place by the same devices which secure the body to the runner-frame, substantially as specified.
