UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICHOLAS HUETTER, OF KENOSHA, W ISOONSIN.
BURGLAR-PROOF SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,036, dated September 7, 1880.
Application filed April 6, 1880.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NICHOLAS HUETTER, of Kenosha, Kenosha county, Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Closet or Safe, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a closetor safe which may be concealed in a wall, and provide the same with secret devices for giving entrance thereto.
The invention consists in a box fitted with a hinged cover that is held closed by sliding catches and thrown open by a spring when released, and having combined with it a rockshaft and cran k-lever for operatingthe catches.
The mechanism is operated by a knob, wire, or other means connected with the crank-lever, and passing to the place at which it is to be operated. I also provide a button for locking the catches and preventing the cover from being opened.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is af'ront elevation of my improved closet or safe, the door Fig.2 is a vertical section on line 0000 of Fig. 1'.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is an oblong rectangular box, of wood or metal, fitted with a hinged cover, a. This box is to be embedded or fixed in awall, as shown in Fig. 2, the cover a being flush with the face of the wall and forming the front, and space being made in the wall above the box for the working mechanism.
Upon the top of the box standards b b are fixed, which standards receive between their flanged edges, or in any other suitable manner, the latches 0 c, that are connected by crossbars cl (1, so that the latches 0 may slide together upon the standards I), and their lower (ModeL) ends move in apertures in the top of box A for engagement with tongues 12 c, that project from cover a.
Upon the standards b, in suitable bearings,
is fitted a cross-shaft,f, from an arm of which a rod, 9, extends to and is connected with the upper cross-bar d of the latches, so tl at by a partial revolution of shaft f the latchs 0 will be raised.
A spring, It, fixed on one standard I), and bearing on the bar (1, tends to press the latches down, and a spring, i, at the inside of box A, hearing on cover a, acts to throw the cover open, when the latches are disengaged, by rising.
For operating the shaft fit is fitted with two arms, ,6 Ir, projecting in opposite directions, and apertured for connection of a wire, as at l, or a forked pin, as at 'm. The pin on projects through the wall and will be fitted with a knob for itsoperation, and the wire I may pass to any convenient place at a distance.
Upon the top of box A is fitted a turning button, n, fitted for being turned over a shoulder on one latch c to prevent the same from rising, and thus locking the door closed. This button may be operated through a small opening made in the wall.
Having thus described Ill yin vention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The closet or safe consisting of the box A, with hinged cover or, having combined with it the sliding latches c, rock-shaft f, rod spring h, and crank-arms 76, substantially as shown and described.
