FOLDING MAILING BOX Filed July 21, 1941 Albert 7?. Curi'iS Patented Nov. 10, 1942 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE FOLDING MAILING BOX Albert R. Curtis, Milwaukee, Wis. Application July 21, 1941, Serial No. 403,440
1 Claim.
This invention relates to the official class of paper receptacles and more particularly foldable mailing boxes.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of a mailing box constructed from a blank piece of material, preferably heavy water proof paper, adapted, when folded, to provide an address receiving flap projecting therefrom.
Another object of this invention resides in the particular manner of securing the address receiving flap and box in set up condition.
A further object of this invention resides in the particular means carried by the address receiving flap for engagement by adhesive tapes in sealing the box.
With these and other objects in view this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter more fully set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim and, while this disclosure depicts my present conception of the invention, the right is reserved to resort to such changes in construction and arrangement of elements as come within the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the blank from which the box forming the subject matter of this invention is constructed.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the mailing box in set up condition.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view thereof approximately on line 3--3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of blank.
Fig. 5 is a similar view of the mailing box constructed from the blank shown in Fig. 4.
In the preferred form of the invention as illustrated by Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the numeral 5 designates a mailing box which is formed from a blank piece of material 6, preferably heavy water proof paper, the same being foldable on dotted lines 1 to provide a bottom flap 8, front flap 9,
back flap l0, and top flap ll each of which carries end flaps l2 foldable on dotted lines l3, said bottom flap 8 is provided with an address receiving flap l4 having a centrally or otherwise disposed locking tongue [5 stamped therefrom for engagement in a slit l6 in the top flap and side tongues I! adapted to lie on the top flap when closed and be secured by adhesive tapes H3 or the like which also retains the end flaps I2 in closed condition,
In the modified form of the mailing box, as illustrated by Figs. 4 and 5, the blank from which it is formed is identical to that from which the preferred form of the mailing box is formed except that the tongue I 5 and slit [6 are omitted whereupon the side tongues l1 and tape l8 are employed to retain the box in set up and sealed condition.
Although there is but one locking tongue 15 employed in the instant case and the side tongues are restricted in lengths and widths, the former may be increased in number and the latter may be otherwise formed so as to carry out the functions assigned thereto.
With this invention fully set forth it is manifest that a foldable mailing box is provided which may be constructed in various sizes and readily set up so as to provide a convenient area for a mailing address and, through the simplicity of construction thereof, it can be cheaply maniactured and sold at a reasonable price.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A foldable mailing box comprising bottom, front, back and top flaps carrying end flaps, said top flap having a slit therein, an address receiving flap formed on the bottom flap and extending beyond the top flap, a locking tongue carried by the address receiving flap and engaging the slit in the top flap, side tongues carried by the address receiving flap and lying on the top flap and adhesive tapes simultaneously securing the side tongues and end flaps in set up condition.
ALBERT R. CURTIS.
