ORSON S. HASKELL, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
MAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,010, dated July 13, 1880.
Application filed December 10, 1879.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ORsoN S. HAsKELL, of Evanston, in the county of Cook and State of' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Maps, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to those devices for accompanying a map with an index or other matter.
Heretoi'ore maps have been furnished with indexes either by printing the index around the border of the map or by printing the index in book form and then folding and pasting the map-sheet into the book. The former is ob- 1 5 jectionable because it enlarges the map to such an extent that it is cumbersome and practically prevents a large and comprehensive map from being indexed. The second method is objectionable because, the map-sheet bein g folded, it is difficult to consult it for reference, the foldingand opening soon Wears it out; besides, this method of indexing cannot be successfully applied to large and comprehensive maps, as it is practically impossible to open out and fold up a large map-sheet Whenever it is needed for reference.
My invention consists in securing to one of the map-rollers index or key sheets of convenient widths and of any desired number.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure lis a perspective View. of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows the position of the front index-sheet when elevated for the purpose of inspecting a sheet beneath.
A, Fig. 1, is the outer index-sheet, the upper edge of which is secured to the map-roller B and the lower edge of which is secured to the drop-roller C. D, Fig. 2, is a second indexsheet.
The inap-roller B enables the map to be rolled from the top as Well as from the bottom.
It is evident that these index-sheets can be applied to either side of the map, or to both sides, if required.
The combination, with a map, of index-sheets secured by their upper edges to the map-roller and pendent on the side of the map, substantially as shown and described.
ORSON S. HASKELL.
