Description

'(ModeL) G. W. EMERSON. Metallic Guard for Book Covers.
No. 230,256. Patented July 20,1880.
NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
GEORGE W. EMERSON, OF AFTON, IOWA.
METALLIC GUARD FOR BOOK-COVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,256, dated July 20, 1880. 7
Application filed April 26, I880. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE IV. EMERSON, of Afton, in the county of Union and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a book with my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2, detached "iew of my improved metallic guard for the lower or bottom edge of book-cover; Fig. 3, detached view of my improved guard for the corner of cover; Fig. 4, plan view of the blank for forming the metallic guard shown in Fig. 2.
My invention relates to certain new and use ful improvements in metallic guards for protecting and preserving the edges and corners of the covers of records and other heavy books; and the invention consists in novel constructions of guards for the edges and corners of the covers of books, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in' the claim.
In the drawings, A represents the metallic guard, especially designed for protecting the edge of the cover of a book, formed from a single blank of sheet-brass, as clearly represented in Fig. 4. This blank is ruled and folded as shown by dotted lines, and is provided with projecting end a, cut or slit so as to form the flaps I) c, the flap 0 being provided with tongues d d, which enter the holes a 0 when the blank is folded together, as shown in Fig. 2, for securing it in that position. In
forming this guard the sides f f are turned up at right angles to the portion 9, which formsthe bottom of the guard, while the parts ff form the sides thereof. The flap I) is then turned upward and the flap 0 turned around the same, and its portion 0 bent around the side f and fastened by the tongues d (I being passed through the holes 6 c in the side f, thus forming the guard with one end open, as at B, so that it will slip over the edge of the cover, with its closed end against the corner thereof, in which position it is secured by rivets, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. In forming these guards it will be readily perceived that the sides 7" f should be reversed in order to form the guard for the edge of the cover on the opposite side of the book.
Fig. 3 represents a guard especially designed for the top corners of the book, which is formed from a single blank of the same material, ruled and cut so that it will fold together, forming in the corner a right angle that will fit either corner of the cover, and with the ends it h overlapping each other, as shown in Fig. 3, in which position they may be secured together in a similar manner to the closed end shown in Fig. 2, said guards being secured to the corners of the cover by rivets, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-' l The herein-described metallic guard for the edges and corners of the covers of books, formed from a single blank of sheet metal, ruled and cut as shown, forming the bottom 9, with end flap, I), side f, with openings 0 c, and side f, with end flap, c 0, having tongues (Z (1, adapted to be folded and secured together substantially in the manner specified.
G. W. EMERSON.
