SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,188, dated June 22, 1880,

Application filed January 14, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, MAX RUBIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fans, of

which the following is a specification.

Figure l is a perspective view of the im provement closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the fan opened. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the fan [0 closed. Fig. 4. is an edge view of one of the stiffening-strips.

This invention relates to that class of fans in which the web issecured upon'two hinged handles, and has for its-object to make the fans stronger, stifi'er, and more durable.

The invention consists in connecting the handles by a double-jointed hinge, in recessing the handles to receive the folded web, in

combining stiffening-strips with the hingepivots and the web, and in combining with the handles a catch for fastening the handles to gether when the fan is closed and when open,

A B are the two handles of the fan. The handles A B are hinged to each other at their upper ends by two plates, 0, through which two pivots, D, pass, so that the handles A B may be parallel with each other when the fan is closed and when it is open.

E is the web of the fan, which is made of paper, cloth, or other suitable material cut into a long strip'and folded in the usual Way. The

3 5 folds of the web E are loosely sewed together at one end, and the outer folds are secured to the. handles A B.

The inner sides of the handles A B, for a distance equal. to the length of the folds of the 40 web E, are recessed to receive thefolded web E, the recesses being made of such a depth that each recess may receive half the folded web E, so that the inner sides of the handles A B, when the fan is closed, may be parallel 5 with each other and close together, the web E being entirely inclosed and protected' The web E is stiffened and strengthened by two strips, F, of thin sheet metal or other suitable material, which strips are bent over. at

one end to form eyes to receive the pivots D.

The strips F are placed between and secured to two folds of the web E, so as to be entirely concealed.

The handles A B are provided with fastenings to hold them close together, both when 5 5 the fan is closed and when it is opened. The fastening may be placed near the edge of the web E or at the ends of the handles.

The fastening G (shown in the drawings) is a pivot having a crosshead at each end, which pivot passes through and is pivoted to one handle, as B, and the other handle has a slit through it of such a size that the cross-head of the pivot G will pass through it, so that the handles may be fastened together by passing the said cross-head through the said slit and then turning the pivot through a quarter of a revolution, bringing the cross-head across 'the slit, as shown in Fig. 1.

The handles A B may be fastenedl together at their ends by a ring or loop, H, hinged to the end of one handle in such a way that it may be swung over the end of the other handle, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3.

Various other fastenings may be used pro vided they are so formed as to fasten the said handles when face to face, as shown in Fig. l,'

and when back to back, as shown in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my in ven tion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Fat ent 1. In a fan, the combination, with the two handles A B and the web E, of the two pivots D and the two connecting-plates 0, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby a double-jointed hinge is produced to allow the handles to be parallel when the fan is open and when closed, as set forth.

2. In a fan, the handles A B, made substantially as herein shown and described, with recesses in their inner sides to receive the folded web E, as set forth. 7

3. A fan provided with two strips, F, concealed in the folds of the web and having end eyes, whereby they both stiffen the web and 5 support the pivots D, as shown and described.
