PATENT PETER WIEDERER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FOLDING MIRROR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,742, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed March 18, 1885. Serial No. 158,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, PETER WIEDERER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Mirrors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved folding mirror of that class in which three mirror-plates are so united that they can be arranged at any suitable angle to each other, and neatly folded up after use; and the invention consists of a folding mirror formed of a main and two side mirror-plates, the frames of which are connected by double hinges with intermediate straps or leaves. The pintles of one hinge are arranged midway between the edges of the main frame and one side frame, while the pintles of the double hinges, connecting the main frame with the other side frame, are arranged at the adjoining edges of said frames, so that one side plate folds readily over the main plate and the other side plate over the folded side plate.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved folding mirror, shown extended for use.' Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an end View of the mirror as folded up; and Figs. 4 and 5 show, respectively, the hingeconnection of the middle mirror-plate at opposite sides of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A A A represent three mirror-plates of suitable size, and a a a", the frames of the same. The frame a of the main mirror-plate A is connected with the frame a of the side mirror-plate A by double hinges B B, which are so attached to the frames a a that the pintles of the double hinges B B are located midway between the edges of the frames a a. The pintles of the hinges B B are connected by straps or leaves b b, which extend over the joint between the frames a a, when the mirror-plates A A are folded one over the other, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. By the double hinges B B the side mirror-plate A can be readily folded over the main mirror-plate A.
To the opposite side of the frame a of the mirror-plate A is hinged by double hinges G the frame a of the opposite side plate, A The pintles of the hinges O O are, however, not located midway between the edges of the frames a a, but at the adjoining edges of the frames a a as shown respectively in Figs. 3 and 5. The double hinges O 0 have connecting straps or leaves I) b, which are equal in width to the thickness of the frame a.
The described arrangement of the hinges B and 0 permits the folding of the mirror-plates A A A one upon the other, as the disposition of the hinges B B brings the side plate A snugly over the main plate A, and the disposition of the hinges O G the side plate A snugly over the plate A. At the same time the open space between the frames of the mirror-plates A A and A A is of about the same width when the plates are opened. The double hinges B and 0 permit the setting of the side mirronplates, A A, at any suitable angle to the main plate A, either in front of or at the back of the same, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The side plates, A A", can be arranged not only at the customary forward angle of inclination to the middle plate, A,
but also one in forward the other in backward direction, or both in backward direction, so as to inclose a triangular space. This feature permits of a more extensive use of the folding mirror than when the plates are 0011- nected by plain hinges in the manner heretofore in use, in which case only a forward position of the side plates is possible.
I am aware that hinges having intermediate folding straps or leaves connected to pintles, and the leaves attached permanently to the articles to be connected, have been used heretofore, and I therefore do not claim this hinge construction, broadly.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a framed mirrorplate and two framed side plates with double hinges having intermediate folding straps or leaves by which the side plates are hinged to the frame of the main plate, the pintles of the double hinges of one side plate being arranged midway to the edges of the main and side frames, while the pintles of the double hinges of the opposite side plate are arranged at the adjoining edges of the frames of the main plate and opposite side plate, whereby the side plates may beset to any angle of inclination to the main plate and snugly folded over the same, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a main mirror-plate, A, having a frame, a, a side mirror-plate, A, having a frame, a, double hinges B B, connecting the frames a a, the pintles of said. hinges being arranged midway between the edges of the frames 64 a and connected by straps or leaves I) b, a second side plate, A having a frame, a, and double hinges O 0, connecting the frame a to the opposite side of the frame a, the pintles of said hinges being arranged at PETER WIEDERER.
