No. 237,611. Patented Feb. 8,1881.
WIN'VENTOR @flw ATTORNEY WITNESSE UNITED STATES PATENT Orric.
SIMON SGHEUER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 237,611, dated February 8, 1881.
Application filed November 2, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON SOHEUER, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Fans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in that class of fans in which the web is connected to the upper parts of two handles which are hinged together at their upper ends, and by which the web is either closed or opened, according as they are brought face to face or back to back; and the invention consists of an improved hinge-connection for the upper ends of the handles, and secondly, of re-enforcing the fastening of the web to the upper parts of the handles by means of exterior bindingframes or shells.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent side views of myimproved fan, respectively in open and closed position; and Fig.3 is a detail horizontal section of the same on line a: .90, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a top view of the fan in closed position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A in the drawings represents the web, and B B the handles, of my improved fan. The handles are pivoted at their upperends to central disks, 0, at both sides of the web A, the disks being riveted together by a fixed transverse stay-pin, e, which is arranged centrally between the pivot-pins d of the handles in the narrow portion of the disks, between the slots and the outer circumference of the same. The pivot-pins d of the handles are guided in an arc-shaped slot, d, of each disk, along which (No model.)
been glued to the upper parts of the handles B, which, especially when the handles were of sheet metal, made them liable to spring loose therefrom, so as to render the fan useless, to the great annoyance of the owner. This objection I have successfully overcome by arranging, in connection with each handle B, an exterior shell, D, of sheet metal, which laps by inwardly-bent flanges over to the inside of the upper part of the handle and binds also over the end fold of the web, so as to retain the same reliablyin connection with the upper part of the handles. In this manner the disconnection of the web from the handles is prevented, and at the same time a very ornamental appearance of the fan secured. The connecting pivot-pins (1 pass through the shells or frames D, and are thereby firmly held in position without danger of splitting the handle ends.
In place of the shell a framing or lining at each edge of the handle may be used, in which case the intermediate part or panel is covered with 'leather or other fabric and thereby even a more ornamental finish imparted to the fan.
Having thus described my invention, I.
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As an improvement in fans, the combination, with the web and handles, of two center disks having arc-shaped guide-slots, a transverse stay-pin, and connecting pivot-pins which pass through the handles and guideslots of the disks, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improvement in fans, the handles or side pieces, B B, having at their upper parts exterior shells or frames, D, with inwardly-bent overlapping flanges for retaining the end folds on vthe handles, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name, in presence oftwo witnesses, this 27th day ofOctober, 1880.
SIMON SGHEUER.
