To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GDALIE PORTNOY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Collar-Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to necktie fasteners of that class which combine with them a collar button; and the object of the same is to produce a single toilet article which will both fasten the collar to the shirt band at the rear and retain the band or strap 0f the necktie.

This object is accomplished by constructing the article as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as shown in the drawings wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the rear portion of a collar and shirt band from the inside, showing the collar button in place and indicating in dotted lines the position of its plate and rollers, and the necktie-band is here extended beyond one end of the other articles.

Fig. 2 isa perspective view of this device on a considerably enlarged scale.

Fig. 3 is an end view of the article, and Fig. 4 is a plan view showing a modification in that a single roller is employed.

In the drawings the letter S designates the shirt band, C the collar, and N the necktie strap or band where it passes around behind the neck. The shirt may open at the rear or at the front, and it has a button hole at the rear which registers with a similar button My invention is a single fastener which connects these button holes and at the same time provides means for holding the strap of the necktie away from the fastener by anti-friction means.

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 2 and 3, the button is here shown as of a type which is made up of two leaves 1 and 2, hinged at 3 to a stem 4, and capable when closed of being folded together so that they occupy rather little space and may easily be passed through a button hole, while I they are capable also when opened of being turned to right angles so that they will stand in alinement with each other inside the collar C, At the other end of the stem is a plate 5 which may be oval or round but is preferably rectangular, and between upturned ears 6 at its ends is journaled a roller 7. There may be two pairs of ears and two rollers as seen in Fig. 2, or a single pair of ears and a single roller as seen in Fig. 4. The ears may be tangs upstruck from the plate, or wires rising therefrom and extending throughout the length of a tubular roller, or the tangs may have eyes in which trunnions at the ends of the roller extend. These details are not essential, but in any case I would have the roller or rollers stand but little above or spaced from the plate so that the strap N of the necktie may pass over them, and in any case the rollers stand at right angles to the pintle of the hinge 3 for a purpose which will appear.

The device is made of suitable material and of appropriate size. In use the button is passed through the holes in the shirt band and collar, and if the button be of the type herein described the two leaves are passed through said button holes when they are folded together, and are opened outon the inside of the shirt band. This brings the plate 5 fiat up against the band of the collar. Now the strap or band N of the necktie is passed around the neck and over the roller or rollers on the plate, and it is perfectly free so that it mav be drawn taut and tied in front as usual. The presence of this necktie prevents the turning of the plate and therefore the turning of the stem 4 within the button holes. Moreover the engagement of the button stem in the button holes prevents the tilting movement of the rollers, and therefore these elements always engage the necktie at the back. Thus there is a coaction between these elements which is essential and desirable in a device of this kind. While I have particularly described a button consisting of two folding leaves, it is clear that other types of collar button may be employed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed as new is As a new article of manufacture, a collar button comprising a stem, leaves hinged to one end of the stem, a substantially rectangular plate fastened across the other end of the stem and having ears at top and bottom, and a roller journaled in said ears with its axis at right angles to the pintle of said hinge, the whole for use substantially as described.
