LABEL-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,757, dated June 15, 1880.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, J AMES HENDERSON, of the town of Gambusbarrow, near Stirling, North Britain, engineer, have invented an Improved Label or Card Fixer for Railway Cars or Trucks, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to a device for securely holding cards, labels, way-bills, or printeddirections to the sides of railway ears or trucks.

The object of my invention is to provide a device which will securely hold any card, waybill, or printed or-written directions in firm attachment to the sides of cars or trucks, so

as to be in plain view; and when desirable to be removed or replaced the card or other paper may be readily detached by simply pulling 011 a loop or ring, and another card be put into place, when the device, on being released, will spring back and bind it to the side of the car until intentionally removed.

The invention consists in an elastic binder, made in the form hereinafter more particularly described, and a grooved bar, so arranged in relation to each other that the grooved bar will support the lower end of the card or other paper, while the elastic binder willclamp' the same at its upper portion and securely bind it to the side ofthe car or truck.

In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure l represents a front elevation ot' my invention, illustrating one modification of the improved elastic binder. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the binder at about the middle of its width. Fig. 3 is a vert-ical sectional view. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the binder when detached, and illustrating a modification of theform of pulling loop or ring. Fig. 5 is a face view of the same, and Fig. G represents a face View land edge view of the clips or ties for securin g the binder to the sides of the car.

In the drawings, A represents a side of the zontally, if desired, and with the groove"`a next the side ofthe car orV truck, and is secured :in place by screws or other equivalent devices.

C is an elastic binder, made of metal,either steel or spring-brass, and preferably of fiat material,though round or half-round material may be employed. The outer ends of this binder are turned back, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to hold against the clips or ties D when securedin place.

At about the middle of the length Vof the binder is provided a ring, b, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or aloop, b', (shown in Figs. 4 and 5,) which ring or loop is intended as a means by which the operator may draw the body of the binder forward when a paper is to be placed in position or removed. This binder, when detached, has the form shown in edge view, Fig. 4. With this form the binder will bc made stift' when its ends are held down tothe wood by the clips D D, as in Fig. 1.

The binder G is secured by clips D D to the side of the car at several inches from the grooved bar B. This distance will be gov crned by the size of the card to be held, as nr dicated by card E. (Shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1.)

When it is desired to place a card and ix the same, the operator will with his lingers pull on ring I), or equivalentloop b', and draw the middle portion of the binder out from the side of the car and insert card E behind the binder, carrying the end ofthe card in to groove a'of the bar B, as indicated in Fig. 1. Then he permits the binder to spring back against the card it will be held there. To remove the card the operator will pull forward the binder, when it may be readily taken from its place.

It will be readily seen that this device is simple, and when once properly placed will not be liable to be injured by accident or get out of order, and will at all times be ready for use. Its use will obviate all necessity of using tacks or nails, and way-bills or printed directions or invoices attached to cars to accompany freight can be removed without being torn or marred and led away for future reference.

This invention is substantially the same invention for which Letters Patent of Great Britain No. 4,302 Were granted to me on the 17th day of November, 1877.

Having described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is-- v 1. The combination and'arrangement ofthe elastic binder C, made in the form described and shown, .and provided with pulling-ringo,

or equivalent loop b', with the clips D, allE adapted to be placed and secured to the side of a car or truck, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination, with the elastic binder,`

as described, and binding-pieces D D, ot' the grooved bar B, arranged in relation to the said binder for operation substantially as and. for the purpose setforth.
