arise as resal s its eateries.
mecca- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ULYssns S. CORNELL,
a citizen of the United States residing at Grand Haven, county of Ottawa, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stakes for Trucks and Flat-Cars, of which the followlng 1s a specification.
This invention relates to improvements" in stakes for trucks and flat cars.
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved stake for trucks, fiat cars and the like, which may be quickly and easily removed and is at the same time effectively retained when engaged, in its pocket. 1
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a side view of a motor truck embodying the features of my invention, the parts being shown mainly conventionally.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 22 of Figs. I and III.
Fig. III is a detail horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Figs. I and II.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines. 7
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the deck or body of a truck. In the structure illustrated the body is provided with an edge iron 2. Stake pockets 3 are secured to the edge of the body at suitable spaced intervals The stakes 4 have reduced portions 5 adapted to be engaged in the stake pockets, the stakes being shouldered at 6 to rest on the deck. The stake has a longitudinal slot 7 in its engaging portion adapted to receive the latch 8, which is pivoted in the slot at 9 so that its bill 10 will engage under the deck as shown in Fig. II. The latch has a rearwardly projecting arm 11 projecting above Specification of Letters" P atnt. Application filed Januaiy 25, 1918. SeriariTOLiavOa Paaataioa. s, i913.
the stake pocket and to which is connected the-release rod 12. Thestake has a longitudinal groove 13 in its rear side adapted to receive this release rod. Straps or clips" 14L retain the re- 7 least rod inits" upright position. The latch is held yieldingly in engaging position by means of the coiled spring 15 arrangedon the rod and with its upper end seating against the lower strap 14. At its upper end the rod is bent away from the stake and formed into a handle 16.
With the parts thus arranged, the latch may be disengaged by grasping the handle 16, which is positioned at the upper end of the stake. The release rods, being positioned on the outer sides of the stakes and in the grooves in which they are retained by the strap 14, are not likely to be distorted even when the stakes are roughly or carelessly handled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a body or deck, of a stake pocket mounted on the edge of said deck, a-removable stake coacting with said pocket and shouldered to engage said deck, said stake having a longitudinal slot in its pocket engaging portion and a longitudinal groove on its outer side, a latch pivoted in said slotto engage the under side of said deck and provided with an outwardly projecting arm, a release rod connected to said arm and disposed in said groove in the outer side of said stake, a retaining strap for said rod, and-an actuating spring for said latch mounted on said release rod and seating against said retaining clip.
2. In a structure of the class described, the combination with a body or deck, of a stake pocket mounted on the edge of said deck, a removable stake coacting with said pocket, said stake having a longitudinal slot in its pocket engaging portion, a latch pivoted in said slot to engage the under side of said deck and provided with an outwardly projecting arm, a release rod connected to said arm and disposed on the outer side of said stake, and an actuating spring for said latch. V
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a stake pocket, a removable stake having a longitudinal slot in its pocket engaging portion and a longitudinal groove in its outer side, a latch pivoted in said slot and provided with an outwardly projecting arm, a release rod connected to said arm and disposed in said groove in the Outer side of said stake, a retaining strap for said rod, and an. actuating spring for said latch mounted on said release rod and seating against said retaining clip. 7
4. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a stake pocket, a removable stake having a longitudinal slot in its pocket engaging portion and a longitudinal groove in its outer side, a latch pivoted in said slot and provided With an outwardly projecting arm, and a release rod connected to said arm and disposed in said groove in the outer side of said stake.
5. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a stake pocket, a removable stake a. latch pivoted on said stake, a 20 ULYSSES S. CORNELL. [11. s] Witnesses JAs. W. OAKEs,
