UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CORODEN J. SLAFTER, OF GRAND J UNOTION, MIOHIGAN.
CAR-LABEL HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 256,248, dated April 11,1882.
Application fiied December .9, 1881 (N0 model.)
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be il; known that I, CORODEN J. SLAFTER, a eitizen ofthe United States, residing ab Grand Junction, countyof Van Euren, State of Michi gan, have invented a new am] useful Gar-Label Holder, of which the following is a specification.
The object; of myinveution is to construct a deyice adapted for connection with a railroad frdight-car, by means 0f whiclr the labels and cards u"sed to designate the contents and des-.
tination, &c. of a car may be securely and more readily attached t0 the same thnn by previously-devised means.
My invention consists 0f a plate provided with spurs and a elamping device adapted for forcing the card onto said spurs and holding it securely, the whole being adapted for counecting with the outside of the Wall 0f a boxcar 0r the frame of a flat car.
' In the drawings forminga part 0f this S])Q0ification, Figure l isa perspective view of my device detached froxn the car; Fig. L, a front; view with the device attached t0 a car-wall; Fig. 3, the same holding a label, and Fig. 4 ncross-section 0n dotted line in Fig. 2.
B is-the plate, having mns y y. Thecl z unp proper,sis formed from a piece of spring-wre. AI: v it is bent outward, for=.ning a handle t0 operate it by. 'lhe wire is c0iled around arms y y, formi ng helices c c, from Which the t'wo euds extend down the back side of plate B in grdoves e e, and terminate in sharp spurs a a, projecting through holes in said plate. Tlxus the clamp and spurs are all made of a single piece of wire, which, should ib become broken, ca n be detached fr0m its Support B and readily replaced with another.
The helic es form convenient means of counecting the clamp with the plate, am]. add greatly 130 the elastic force 0f said clamp.
By securing the device to the car by screws t t 0x other practical means the spurs are kept; out in place.
In the operation clamp s is sprun g outfrom the plate 01 car, as in Fig. 1, by the operator standing on the ground by the side 0f the car, (aus the car moves past him, or otherwise,) and card or label D is inserted between the platze und clamp, when the latter is released, which by its elastic force 01 power forces the label onto the spurs and retains ib securely, as before stated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new,and desire-to secnre byLetters Patent, is
1. A labebholder consisting of a plate provided with arms for supporting a clamp, a clmnp coiliug around each of said arms, forming springsaud extended vertically therefrom and passed throngh the plate, terminating in spurs adapted t0 receive the label 011 the fronl;
faceof' said plate,whereit is held by theclamparms, alLsubstantially as described, for the purpose Set forth.
2. The combinat-ion, subsbantially as sei; forth, 0f the plate with its arms aud rear grooves and holes for the spurs, und the clamp having tl1e handle, the helices, and the extended ends with the spurs all adapted f0r the purposes Set forth.
OORODEN J. SLAFTER.
