THOMAS I. HYDE, JR., OF CLIFTON FORGE, VIRGINIA.
TONGUQSUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 545,364, dated August 27, 1895,
Y Application filed December 1,1894. Serial No. 630,574. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs I. HYDE', J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifton Forge, in the county of Alleghany and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tongue- Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to tongue-supports; and the objects of the same are to supply for tongues of heavy vehicles of all kinds a support that can be applied directly to any tongue without being connected to the axle or any other part of the vehicle, which is simple in construction, easily and quickly applied, and partly automatic in operation.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l isa side elevation of atongue and the support; Fig. 2, a central section of the same, and Fig. 3 an end view.
My invention consists of four parts onlythe tongue, the tongue-support, a bar carrying said support and connecting it to the tongue, and a spring connected to said bar for holding the support in place and for automatically controlling in part the action of the support.
Referring to the drawings, A is a tongue of any vehicle, to the under side of which is secured by screws or other suitable means a plate B. vThe plate B is provided with downwardly-extending wings C. To these wings and between them is pivotod at a, or hinged, a supportingarm D. To the plate B is also secured a spring-bar E. The outer end of this spring-bar is free and extends between the wings O, over the top of the support D, and bears thereon. The upper end of the support D is inclined at g, as shown, to give the spring-bar its full and proper action.
The operation of the device is as follows: W'hen it is desired to support the tongue the same is turned down by hand to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. Willen the vehicle is moved forward the support D is thrown back against the action of the spring E, and will drag over the ground, or if lifted high enough the spring will carry it up against the tongue, as shown at h in dotted lines in Fig. 1, or if the vehicle is backed the support will be thrown forward, as shown at 1I in the same ligure, or the support may be folded by hand up against the tongue by turning it in either of these positions, and the action of the spring E will hold the support up against the tongue when thus placed.
The plate and its wings, the spring-bar, and the support, all secured together, as shown, constitute in themselves a single attachment which can be applied to any suitable tongue.
The manner of securing theplate to the tongue, the spring to the plate, and of pivoting the support to the plate may be varied without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination with the tongue, of the plate, B, secured to the under side of said tongue, said plate provided with downwardly extending wings, C, the spring bar, E, secured at one end to said plate and having its opposite end free but inolosed by said wings, the support, D, having an inclined top boaring against said spring bar at its free end and hung pivotally between the wings of said plate, whereby said support when sustaining said tongue is adapted on the moving of the vehicle to be carried up against the tongue by the action of said spring bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS I. IIYDE, JR.
