Description

J. JJHAYES,
TONGUE SUPPORT.
Patented June 17 (N0 Model.)
\D T J UNITED STATES PATENT ()E IcE.
JAMES J. HAYES, OF SAYBROOK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO DEHALDEMER SIMMONS, OF SAME PLACE.
TONGUE-SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 430,579, dated June 17, 1890.
Application filed December 14, 1889. Serial No. 333,836. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES J. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Saybrook, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Shaft or Tongue Support, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to devices designed for attachment to a vehicle for supporting the shaft or tongue of the same in an elevated position; and the said invention consists in the improved construction hereinafter described and set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the shaft or tongue support embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a portion of said device.
The improved support consists, primarily, of two parts, one of which is presented by a spring A, of the form shown, secured on the axle B, by having its lower horizontal portion a located beneath said axle and perforated for the passage of the depending threaded portion of the clip D, the said portion a being secured in position by having the plate E of the clip bear against the same, so that said projecting threaded ends can be engaged by the nuts I). The said spring A has also a vertical portion located preferably in the rear of the axle and extends above thelatter at which point it is forwardly bent and bifurcated to present members 0 0, between which is a space sufficient to partially admit the shaft or tongue E. Each of said members is bent vertically to form adepression (Z, and beyond the same each member is curved upward to form a deflecting extremity c.
The second part of the device comprises a clip G, having its ends threaded to enable it to be secured to the shaft or tongue F, by means of a plate f and bolt 9, and from each side of said clip extend projections or lugs h.
In use when the shaft or tongue is raised the lug h willeontact with the extremities of the members, and by reason of the end curvature of the latter, together with their general spring character, will be deflected beneath the members and pass into the depressions of the same to be locked therein, so as to retain or hold the shaft or tongue in an elevated position.
It will be understood that the device, which is in the nature of an attachment, comprises but very few parts and can be readily applied to all existing forms of vehicles without trouble or alteration, and that when in position it willnot bein the way in any particular.
I claim- The combination, in a shaft or tongue support for vehicles, of the spring A, supported by the clip 0, and bifurcated to present the members spread to receive a portion of the shaft between them, and bent, as specified, to form depressions and free end portions, together with an independent clip 0, adapted to be attached to the shaft and having lateral projections at each side designed, when the clip C is moved adjacent to the bifurcated portion of the spring, to have contact with the free end portion and caused to pass beneath and be engaged by the bent portions of said members to be retained thereby, substantially as set forth.
