WHIFFLETREE ATTACHMENT.
oemeo.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 7, 1910.
Patented Aug. 29, 1911. Serial No. 585,907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LJosnrrr Wrrrrwonrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Creston, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Whiflietree Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for attaching whiftietrees to vehicles. Its object is to provide improved means for securing a whifiletree upon the thill bar of a vehicle, whereby the wear upon the pivot may be accommodated'to avoid rattling, and greater strength and safety are provided.
It consists mainly in the construction of a plate, arranged upon the cross bar of a pair of thills under the center of the whiffletree, having end lugs and a central pivot extending conically upward, and downwardly a short distance into the cross bar, an open band or clip surrounding the center of the whiflletree loosely, and having end lugs adapted to register with the lugs of said plate, and further provided with a threaded bolt at the center of said clip extending downwardly and terminating as a conical pivot immediately above and in line with said central plate pivot, and means for engaging said conical pivots in said whittletree center.
It further consists of means, including a lower band or clip surrounding the center of said cross bar having end lugs adapted to register with the other lugs aforesaid, whereby the several members may be secured together in position for the uses aforesaid, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and stated in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
Referring thereto, Figure 1 is a side view embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section of Fig. 1 on the line XX. Fig. 3 is a view in detail of the several parts of my device in perspective, said several parts arranged substantially in the position shown in Fig. 2, and set apart for better illustration.
In the drawings, A is the whittletree clip. It is provided wit-h end'lugs a a perforated as shown. At the upper center of this clip, I provide the bolt 7", which terminates downwardly with the conical pivot F, and is secured in position by the nut lock 9, at any desired pressure, upon the whiiiletree W.
E is a metal plate, having end perforations 5 b fitted to register with the perforations a a of the clip A, and provided with a central pivot pin E which terminates conically upward and extends downwardly a short distance in the center of the thill bar S (Fig. 2.)
D is a metal plug which is solidly secured through the whii'lietree center, its opposite ends terminating in conical cavities 6! cl respectively fitted to receive the conical ends E F of the pivot bolts aforesaid.
C is a lower clip having end lugs with perforations c c therein, adapted to register with the perforations a e aforesaid. This clip is fitted tightly upon the thill cross bar S immediately underneath said central plate B. Said members A, B and G being placed in position as aforesaid on said whiiiietree and thill cross bar, they are solidly secured together thereupon by means of bolts or rivets n n (Fig. 2).
If desired the central plate may be secured upon the thill cross bar by means of threaded bolts 2 t as shown in Fig. 2, and, in such case, the lower clip C may be dispensed with at pleasure, without avoiding my invention.
I do not limit myself to the particular form of the several parts, and the same may be modified within the scope of my invention as aforesaid.
The clip A, being larger in diameter than the thickness of the whiffietree, means are thereby provided for the proper swaying of said whiflletree, and also to limit the same in that respect without the need of additional check straps as heretofore used to limit said movement. It is also apparent, that by means of the threaded pivot bolt F and the set lock g, the pressure upon the pivotal parts aforesaid may be regulated at pleasure, and the wear of the parts taken up, and all rattling of the same avoided.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a whifl'letree and a supporting bar, of a metal plate set crosswisebetween the same having end lugs and a central bolt projecting upwardly therefrom and terminating with a conical pivot point, a clip mounted loosely over and across the center of said whifiletree having end lugs adapted to register with the lugs of said plate adjacentthereto, a setscrew bolt threaded into the upper side of said clip and projecting downwardly therefrom and terminating with a conical pivot point, a metal plug secured in the middle of said whiflietree, having a conical cay ity at each end thereof, and bolts passed through said adjacent lugs, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a whililetree and a supporting bar, of a plate mounted crosswise between the same having end lugs, a central bolt projecting upwardly from said plate and terminating in a cone, and projecting downwardly into said supporting bar, a clip loosely mounted over and across the middle of said whiflietree and having end lugs adapted to register with the lugs of said plate adjacent thereto, a set-screw bolt'threaded into the upper side of said clip and projecting downwardly therefrom and terminating in a cone, a metal plug passed through the middle of said Whittletree vertically and having a conical cavity at each end thereof adapted to register with said cones respectively therein, a metal clip secured under and across the said supporting bar having end lugs with perforations adapted to register with the adjacent lugs of said plate and said whiflietree clip respectively, and bolts passed through said several adjacent lugs respectively, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand this 13th day of August, 1910.
JOSEPH VVHITWVOR-TH. Vitnesses MAHLoN ROUGH, J. E. APPLEBAUGI-I.
