WAGON-TONGUE SUPPORT.
Application led March 17, 1915.
To all Lo/0m t may concern Be it known that I, TILLIAM J. COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of Cooke, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Tongue Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in supports for wagon tongues.
One object of the invention is to provide a spring supporting device for a wagon tongue which can be quickly and easily moved into position to support the tongue or move out of position to permit the tongue to be lowered to the ground.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view ofphe front portion of the running gear of a wagon showing my invention applied thereto and in operative position, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the supporting spring swung to one side to permit the tongue to be lowered, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device in the position of Fig. 1, one side of the hound being removed, and Fig. f1 is a side elevation of the parts in the position of Fig. 2, one side of the hound also being removed.
Referring particularly to the acco1npanying drawing, lO represents the tongue or pole of the vehicle and 11 the hounds se- Vcured thereto, while 12 represents the axle of the wagon.
Disposed on the top of the rear end of the tongue between the hounds, and secured to the tongue by means of a bolt 13 is a rearwardly extending spring plate 14. Secured to the rear end of the plate 14 by means of a bolt 15 is a rearwardly and downwardly Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1916. Serial No. 15,067.
curved spring plate 16, the rear end of which is provided with an upwardly directed hook 17. .Secured to the under side of the center of the axle 10 by means of the U-clips 19 is a plate 18, the forward edge of which is downturned as at 20 for interlocking engagement with the hook 17 of the spring plate 16.
When the parts are in position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the pole 10 will be resiliently supported in an approximately hori- Zontal position, both the plate 14 and the plate 16 exerting tension to support the tongue. vWhen it is desired to lower the tongue to the ground, the spring plate 16 is swung to one side on the pivot bolt 15 so as to disengage its hooked end from the downturned end 20 of the plate 18.
It will thus be seen that I have provided an extremely simple and cheap device which can be secured to a vehicle without any modiiications to the vehicle and in a very short time. Furthermore, the device is so constructed that it can be quickly and easily disengaged to permit the pole to be lowered to the ground.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
The combination with the pole and axle of a vehicle, of a rearwardly extending plate secured at its forward end to the upper side of the pole, a plate having a downturned forward edge secured to the axle, and a rearwardly extending spring member pivotally connected to the first-named plate for lateral movement, said spring member having an upwardly directed terminal hook for engagement with the axle attached Jlate.
I In testimony whereof, I aix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
