UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM J. ROSE, OF HORSEHEADS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NORRIS M. COMPTON, OF SULLIVANVILLE, NEW YORK.
WHIFFLETREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 482,698, dated September 13, 1892. Application filed February 24, 1891. Serial No. 382,683- (ModeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. ROSE, of Horseheads, in the county of Ohemung and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletrees; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in whiffletrees, the object of the invention being to construct the device in such manner that the pivot will be relieved from undue strain.
A further object is to so construct the device that the Whiffletree will be effectually connected to the vehicle and prevented from turning over.
WVit-h these objects in view the invention consists in the combination, with the draft devices of a vehicle and a whiffletree, of a plate secured to said whiffietree and having a perforation therein,a plate on the draft devices, a pintle projecting from the last-mentioned plate, a tongue on the plate secured to the whiffletree, and a loop on the plate on the draft devices adapted to receive said tongue.
The invention further consists in the combination, with the cross-bar of the draft devices and a whiffletree, of a perforated plate secured to the whifiletree, a tongue projecting from said plate and having a beveled face, a plate secured to the cross-bar, and a loop to receive said beveled tongue.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of a portion of a whifiletree, showing my improvement attached; and Fig. 4 is a view in rear elevation.
A represents a whiffletree, to the bottom of which a plate 13 is secured, said plate being provided centrally with aperforation a. Projecting from one edge of the plate Bis a tongue 0, adapted to project slightly upwardly; or said tongue may be in line with the plate and the upper face only made inclined or beveled.
Secured to the top face of the cross-bar A of the draft devices is a plate D, provided centrally with an integral sleeve 19, adapted to project upwardly from the face of the plate D and enter the perforation a in the plate B, and thus pivotally connect the whiflietree A to the cross-bar A. At one end of the plate D a loop E is formed and adapted to receive the tongue 0 of plate B, the inner upper Wall of said loop being made inclined for the accommodation of the inclined upper face of the tongue 0 of plate B, said tongue belng also beveled at its sides, so that it may have a limited movement in the loop E. By th s means a swivel connection for a whiffietree is formed which is very simple in construction and efiective in the performance of its functions. By beveling the upper face of the tongue 0 and providing the loop E with a beveled face it will be seen that when the whififletree is drawn the tongue 0 will tend to tighten in the loop E and undue strain upon the pivot will be relieved.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I In a whiffietree connection, the combination of a plate, a tongue projecting from said plate and having one face beveled or inclined, so a plate having a sleeve projecting therefrom and adapted to enter a perforation in the firstmentioned plate, and a loop on said plate adapted to receive said tongue, said loop being provided with an inclined inner face 8 against which said tongue is adapted to bear, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM J. ROSE. Witnesses:
W. R. CROMPTON, J. LEROY NIXON.
