THILL-COUP LING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 564,911, dated July 28, 1896;
Application filed September 5, 1895. Serial No. 561,513. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ELIAS A. BENNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Noblestown, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thill Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in thill-couplings, and has for its object the provision of new and novel means whereby a thill-coupling may be provided that will contain numerous advantages over those now in use.
This invention is an improvement on the thill-coupling for which Letters Patent issued to me August 6, 1895, numbered 543,977. Principal among these advantages is the construction of a thill-coupler whereby the rattling caused by the thill-iron and the coupler is entirely obviated.
The invention has for its further object to provide a thill-coupler of the above-described class that will be. simple in its construction, strong, durable, effectual in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention finally consists in the novel con struction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference is had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved thillcoupling. Fig. 2 is a like view in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the clamp. Fig. 4 is a side view of the same. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the bearing-block.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the clip, which is secured to the axle 2 bya plate 3 and nuts 4: 4. Formed integral with the clip 1 is the socket 5.
The socket 5 is adapted to fit in the ends of the clamp 6, said clamp being provided with retaining sides 7 7 and a back portion 8. The clamp 6 is further provided with lugs 9 9, having screw-threaded apertures 10 10, adapted to receive set-screws 11 11. The reference-figure 12 represents the bearing-block, which is inserted in the clamp 6, and 13 the inner end of the thill-iron, which is inserted in the socket 5 and clamp 6, and held in position by a bolt 14 and a nut 15, the outer end of the thill-iron being represented by the reference-figure 16.
The operation of the coupler will be readily apparent. The socket 5 of the clip 1 is inserted in the clamp 6, and the inner end 13 of the thill-iron is inserted in the clamp 6 and socket 5, and the bolt 14, being inserted through the hole in the inner end of the iron thill 13 and the socket 5, will retain the same in this position. Before the clamp 6 is placed in position the bearing-block 12 is inserted in the same and is retained in its position by the sides 7 7 of the clamp 6 and the back portion 8 of the same. The sides of the socket 5 being inserted in the clamp 6 will form a wall for the ends of the bearing-block 12. It will be observed that by this peculiar construction of the clamp 6 the bearing-block 12 is retained rigidly in its position at all times, which is a great advantage, and will serve to preserve the bearing-block to a much greater extent than Where the same is used in the ordinary manner.
Should any rattling occur, the set-screws 11 11 are adjusted against the inner end 13 of the thill-iron, and force the same against the bearing-block 12, thereby securing at all times a perfect antirattler, as will be readily apparent.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction of my improved thill-coupling without departing from the general spirit of my invention.

In a device of the character described a clip having ends, a clamp adapted to fit be tween the ends, and consisting of a rounded front portion and integral top, bottom and rear retaining-plates and set-screws operating the clamp, as and for the purpose described.
