Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TITUS H. RUSSELL, OF LEBANON, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND HENRY C. MAHURIN, OF NEW YORK CITY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR FASTENING NECK-VOKES TO POLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,157, dated August 15, 1871; antedated August 4, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, TITUs H, RUssELL, of Lebanon, in the county of Grafton and in the State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Device for Fastening N eck-Yokes to Poles; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying' drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a pa-rt of this speciiieation.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for fastening neck-yokes to poles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the saine, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a longitudinal vertical section of the front end of a pole with my device for attaching or fastening the neck-yoke.
A represents the pole, on the under side of which is secured a casting, B, having' at its front end a ring or eye, a., for attaching the head team to. This casting B is slotted longitudinally, and at the rear end of said slot, on the upper side, are ears, between which is hinged an L-shaped tongue, O. The main portion of this tonguemoves in the slot ofthe casting B, and in a recess formed on the under side of the pole A, while the other or vertical portion extends upward from the ears on the casting B through a mortise in the pole, as shown. The rear side of this mortise is beveled, so that this portion of the tongue may be moved back and forth, thereby raising or lowering the front end of the tongue. To that end of the tongue O which extends above the pole A is pivoted a lever, D. O11 the underside of the tongue is a semicircular notch or recess in which the ring E on the neck-yoke fits.
The lever D on top, it will be seen, when turned back against the pin b prevents the tongue from moving up or down, and by raising the lever from its place and drawing backward the tongue is raised, thereby releasing the ring and team from the carriage.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The slotted casting B, tongue C, lever D, and pin b, all constructed and arranged as shown and described, in combination with the recessed and mortised pole A'and the ring E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 5th day of January, 1871.
TITUS H. RUSSELL. [L s] Witnesses:
E. J. DURANT, G. E. DURANT.
