Description
C. PFEPPER. Ohildrens Carriage and Sleigh-Box.
Patented Nov. 26, I878.
Witnesses:
NJPETER5, P
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- CHRISTIAN PFEFFER, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDRENS CARRIAGE AND SLEIGH BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,266, dated November 26, 1878; application filed November 5, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN PFEFFER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Carriage and Sleigh Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has special reference to boxes for childrens carriages, sleighs, 850.; and it consists in the peculiar arrangement with the frame and seat thereof of anfauxiliary seat, placed with its sides and end-board upon the sides and dash-board of said box, and fastened thereto by means of catches, hooks, 860., whereby a single-seated carriage, &c., is converted into a double-seated one, or vice versa, substantially in the manner as and for the purpose hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings heretofore mentioned, which serve to illustrate my invention more fully, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views of the hooks or catches.
A is the usual box of a childs carriage or sleigh, having the seat B arranged in the custom ary manner. The forward part of the sides of this box are sunk lower than the rear end, and upon the edge of said sides and the dashboard C is placed an auxiliary frame, D, having a seat, E, which is raised higher than the rear seat, B, on account of its being fastened above the line of junction of the auxiliary seatone to the auxiliary frame and the other to the box proper, and a sliding bolt, G, having a knob, G. Upon the face of the sliding bolt is arranged a spring-catch, H, fastened with one end to the bolt near the knob, and arranged to engage with its barbed end the lower staple, J. By sliding this bolt into said lower staple the spring-catch H will engage said staple, and thereby securely lock the auxiliary frame to the box, While, by pushing the spring-catch over, the bolt may be withdrawn from the said lower staple and the auxiliary frame removed.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a modified form of the locking arrangement described, in which the plate K has two spring jaws, L, engaging an eye, N, screwed into the box A, the plate K being fastened to the auxiliary seat-frame.
It will be readily observed that by the use of the auxiliary seat-frame any single childs carriage or sleigh can be almost instantly con verted into a double-seated one, which is a great desideratum for parents having small children.
M im)rovcd auxiliar seat-frame is ca )able of being fitted to any existing box, and, owing to its simplicity of construction, can be furnished at a trifling expense.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure to me by a patent .A childs carriage or sleigh box composed of the curved sides A, seat B, and dash-board O, in combination with an auxiliary seat'frame, D, with the end-board O and seat E, said auxiliary seat-frame being removably secured upon the forward end of the box proper by means of two staples, J J, one affixed to the said box and the other to the auxiliary seat-frame, and a sliding bolt, Gr, having the spring-catch H, as and for the object stated.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereto set my hand and affixed my seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. CHRISTIAN PFEFFER. Attest:
MICHAEL J. STARK, J No. STARK.
