BLOCK FOR INTERCHANGEABLE STEREOTYPES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 229,862, dated July 13, 1880. Application filed March 4, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELIJAH P. BROWN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Skeleton'Block for Interchangeable Stereotypes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is a provision to facilitate the combination of interchangeable with permanent matterin stereotype'and electrot'ype blocks, suchas are employed in the headings of newspapers and other serials, market-bulletins, general orders, &c.
For this purpose I provide upon the lower side of the portion which contains the permanent heading a baror rail, which stands a sufficient distance in front of the said portion to receive and hold .the type plate or block containing whatever matter it is desired. for The said type plate orblock is saddle-formed beneath, to enable it to be securely supported by said rail and to be slid to the right or left when required.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a skeleton-block embodyin gmy invention. Fig.2 is a vertical section of the same and of a changeable type plate or block detached.
A represents that portion of the type-block of a newspaper-head which contains the permanent matter. B are lugs or checks projecting therefrom, which afford support to a bar or rail, 0, that stands a sufficientdistance in front of and parallel to the portion A to admit the changeable or separable type-blocks D and quads E, which are slotted at (I beneath, to enable said separable pieces to be mounted saddlewise on said rail (J, in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
The type or blocks D are secured upon the rail 0 by the means ordinarily employed by printers to secure type in forms.
I claim as new and of my invention 1. The skeleton-block A, having lugs B, for supporting a rail or bar, 0, adapted to receive and hold the saddle-formed changeable typeblocks D and quads E, substantially as set forth.
2. In the described combination, the permanent block A B O and the saddle-tbrmed separable type-blocks and quads D E, substantially as set forth.
.In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
ELIJAH P. BROWN.
