UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGER A. OULVER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
ADVERTISING-PANEL FOR DELlVERY- -WAGON= SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 400,831, dated April 2, 1889.
Application filed September 29, 1888A Serial No. 286,751. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGER A. OULVER, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Advertising-Panels for Delivery-WVagons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and-use the same.
My invention relates to removable advertising-panels for delivery-wagons; and it consists in certain features of construction and in combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The modern delivery-wagon has more recently become an advertising medium of such great importance that the well-to-do tradesmen usually make the most of it in advertising their goods. There are, however, many small dealers whose limited means and business would warrant their respectively owning only the small fraction of a delivering outfit, and hence about every town of importance has delivery-wagons for hire, one such wagon being able to accommodate several small tradesmen. I have therefore devised removable advertising-panels for the benefit more especially of such small tradesmen, and by means of which each tradesman, as he chooses, can at a moderate expense advertise his goods at least while the wagon is in his employ. Preferable means of carrying out my invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, portions being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a plan in section on the line 00 as, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear end elevation, one-half thereof being in section on line y y, Fig. 1.
A represents the body of the delivery-wagon, and B the removable advertising-panel. The side frames of the body may have channels O above and channels D below for receiving the upper and lower edges of the advertising-panels B, and upright channels E are provided for receiving the forward edges of these panels. In each channel 0 is a verticallymoving strip, 0, extending lengthwise of the channel, the same being backed with springs c. The strips are held up to their place when the panel is removed by means of screws 0, these screws passing through the coil of spring for holding the latter in place. The screws pass loosely through the strips, and the heads of the screws are countersunk some distance into the strips, so that the latter may be elevated, perhaps a quarter or a half of an inch, without exposing the heads of the screws. In placing the panels in the grooves strips 0' are raised a trifle, and the recoil of the spring 0 presses these strips upon the panels and holds them from rattling. A similar arrange ment of strips E in channel E holds the panel endwise. When the panel is in position, the rear end thereof should be flush with the rear edge of the side frame. The panel is held in such position against the pressure of strip E by means of catches b, of ordinary constructionsuch, for instance, as are commonly used on cupboard-doors. Channels D at the bottom thereof are provided with slight grooves d, these grooves inclining and leaning to drip-hole cl, by means of which any water may be drained from the channels. A number of these movable panels may at a moderate cost be fitted to the wagon with such advertising matter painted thereon as the respective customers may desire, so that each customer may have a set of panels at a moderate expense, or the same customer may have different panels for different advertisements, as the occasion may require.
The panels may be changed in a few mo ments of time, and consequently no time need be lost by the delivery-wagon in making such changes. I
hat I claim is 1. The combination, in a delivery-wagon the side frame of which is provided with upper and lower grooves open at one end, a strip located within the upper groove, and springs for imparting a downward pressure'on said strip, of a panel constructed to be removably secured within said grooves, the spring-actuated strip being arranged to press against the upper edge of the panel, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a delivery-wagon the side frames of which are provided with upper, lower, and an end groove, and strips located in the upper groove and the end groove,
and springs tending to force said strips outwardly from the grooves, of a panel constructed to be removably secured within said grooves, said strips being arranged to press against the end and upper edge of the panel, and latches for locking th e panel in place, sub stantially as set forth.-
In testimony whereof I sign this specification, in the presence of two witnesses, this 13th day of July, 1888.
