Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 16, 1912.
Application filed March 16, 1911. Serial N 0. 614,934.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY S. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising-Cabinets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itap'pertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved advertising cabinet or directory.
The object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, strong and efficient cabinet designed as a free information bureau and classified directory for listing the responsible merchants of the city and the points of interest and their location or for similar purposes.
Another object is to provide a cabinet of this character which is dust and weather proof.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the'accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a cabinet constructed in accordance with this invention with parts broken out; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical section thereof taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is a detail perspective view of the polygonal drum; Fig. 5 is a similar View of the inner casing or frame; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the bottom plate.
In the embodiment illustrated a backing plate 1 of wood or other suitable material and of any desired size and shape, preferably rectangular, is provided on the edges of its front face with right angular flanges as 2 and intermediate of its ends with a cross bar or rib 3 for a purpose to be described.
A frame 4 is mounted on the upper portion of said plate 1 and preferably comprises a rear member 5, top plate 6, bottom plate 7 and a front skeleton member 8.
The rear member 5 is trough shaped, being preferably substantially truncated V- shaped in cross section with the truncated portion thereof forming a flat member for attachment to the plate 1 intermediate of the width thereof, said member 5 being socured to said plate 1 in any suitable manner and the diverging side walls of said member 5 are provided on their free edges with outwardly projecting lateral flanges as 5 on the front faces of which intermediate of the width thereof are arranged longitudinally extending right angularly disposed flanges as 9 having offsets or seats as 10 on their inner faces near the bases of the flanges 9. These offsets or seats 10 are designed to form supports for the side members of the casing as will be hereinafter described.
The bottom plate 7 is secured to the lower end of the member 5 having its rear side resting on the cross rib 3 of the plate 1 and projecting laterally beyond the edges of the member 5 to form a support for the sides and front of the frame as will be hereinafter more fully described. The forwardly projecting port-ion of said bottom plate is preferably rectangular and is provided on its side edges with upwardly extending flanges as 12 which terminate at their front ends near the front edge of the plate to provide seats for the lower ends of the flanges of the front member 8. The corners of the front end of this bottom plate 7 are apert-ured for the passage of fastening screws which engage screw threaded sockets in the lower ends of the flanges of the front member 8 and thereby securely fasten said bottom plate to the front member. This bottom is also provided with a central aperture for the passage of the drum operating spindle.
The top plate 6 is similar in shape to the bot-tom plate 7 and has a central aperture arranged in alinement with the central aperture of the bottom plate to form a hearing for the'upper drum spindle, said aperture having an integral hood arranged thereover to elongate the bearing and to prevent the entrance of dust and dampness. This top plate is provided on its side edges with depending flanges as 13 which terminate near the front and rear'edg'es of said plate to form seats for the upper edge of the flat member 5 and for apertured lugs 8 on the inner face of the front member 8.
' The corners of the rear edges of said plate 6 tured for the passage of fastening screws which extend t-herethrough and through the apertured lugs S of the front meml'ier S to assist in securely holding said top plate in operative position.
The front member 8 of the frame t is in the form of a rectangular frame having a depending plate 14 of any suitable shape and size for containing instructions, for instance, the words Turn knob which indicate that the knob connected with the ope 'ating spindle of the drum to be described is to be turned to disclose the information desired.
A cross bar 15 extends across the upper end of the frame 8 being spaced a suitable distance below the upper end or cross bar of said frame for a purpose to be described. On the inner face of the side members of said frame 8 and the top cross bar are arranged longitudinally extending inwardly projecting flanges 16, and 17, said flanges being arranged intern'iediate of the width of said side and top bars to provide seats for a transparei'it plate 18 arranged below the cross bar 15 and for a smaller transparent plate 19 arranged above said cross bar 15, the lugs 8 being arranged at the ends of said cross bar 15 preferably near its lower edge. The flanges 16, are provided below the cross bar 15 with lateral extensions as 20 which are thinner than the flanges 16 and 16 and arranged to extend flush with the outer faces thereof forming seats as 21 at their inner faces for a purpose to be described. If desired the upper cross bar of the frame 8 may be provided with an upwardly extending plate as 22 which may be ornamented or printed in any desired manner.
Ar 'anged within the frame 4 is a casing 23 which is preferably in the form shown in Fig. 5 consisting of a front member 24 and side members 25 and 26 formed from sheet metal and open at its opposite ends, said ends being closed when the parts are assembled by the forward extensions of the top and bottom plates 6 and 7 of the frame 4:. The front member of the casing 23 has an opening 27 extending longitudinally throughout the length thereof and of any suitable width, the width being regulated by the width of the faces of the drum mount ed in said casing and which faces are adapted to be exposed through said opening. The side edges of this opening 27 are preferably bent back to form means for holding printed cards 28 and 29 in position on opposite sides of said opening. These cards 28 and 29 may contain any desired information such as information concerning churches, hotels, railroad depots and their locations and other information of use to the public.
Resilient outwardly curved strips 30 are arranged at the upper and lower ends of said openin 27 and are designed to bear against the inner faces of the transparent plate 18 at its upper and lower ends for holding it firmly in position in the frame 8 and preventing rattling thereof.
The free edges of the side members 25 and 26 of the casing 23 are designed to fit in seats 9 adjacent the flanges 9 and if desired said side members may be secured to said seats by fastening screws or otherwise.
Arranged in the space above the cross bar 15 is a transparent plate 19 held in position by a backing plate of any suitable material. and between which and said transparent plate is arranged a card 36 preferably containing the title of the cabinet and the infi'iru'iation contained therein, for instance, the words Information bureau and classilied business directory alphabetically arranged, listing the responsible merchants of the city. The top plate 6 of the frame a has its front edge disposed between the lower edge of the plate 35 and the apertured lugs 8, said edge being held in operative position by fastening screws which pass through said plate 6 and through the apertured lugs 8.
Revolubly mounted within the casing formed by the frame 4- and the casing 23 is a polygonal drum 37 here shown in the form of an octagonal cylinder closed at its opposite ends by plates 38 and 39 in the center of which are detachably secured spindles 4:0 and ll the upper spindle 4L0 engaging the aperture in the top plate (3 and the lower spindle 4-1 extending through the ap erture in the bottom plate 7. These spindles during the actuation of the device are liable to become worn or broken and hence may be readily detached and new ones inserted with very little expense. A ball bearing 42 is arranged between the spindle 4:1 and the bottom plate 7 said bearing being of ordinary construction and adapted to cause the ready rotation of the drum. The lower end of the spindle which projects below the plate 7 is provided with an operating handle or knob 43 which is preferably detachably secured to said spindle by a set screw or in any other suitable manner. On the flat faces of this drum 37 are arranged cards or plates as A containing the advertisements or notices desired to be eX- posed through the opening 27 in the front of the casing. These cards may be detachably secured to said drum by any suitable means being here shown as mounted in longitudinally extending guides 45 which are preferably formed by bending inwardly toward each other the edges of the plates which form the flat faces of the drum.
The drum may be revolved by any suitable means preferably by hand, it being turned to expose its various faces each of which contains different information.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
